Articles by Stephen Wright
BLACK MOON | Kirkus Reviews
At 80, Wright has the imaginative energy of a randy teenager channeling the vocabulary of Rabelais and Melville. A life of adventure, romance, and mayhem inspired by the 18th-century Irish pirate Anne Bonny. Very little is known about Bonny’s life, and Wright has filled that blank canvas edge to edge with a saga as wild, lusty, and bloody as any pirate could want, written in maximalist prose combining Old World, nautical, and invented idioms into sentences of befuddling enchantment.
In the public interest: Rex and essential services after neoliberalism
There are widespread calls from regional communities and unions for a government bailout of Rex Airlines. The public interest is central to any such essential services question. It warrants a broader discussion of nationalisation, especially in the face of yet another “market failure” of commercialised essential services. The neoliberal legacy Using public funds to prop up private investment in marginal for-profit sectors of commercialised services has become standard political fare.
“The greatest single aid in removing inequality”: radical politics and the neoliberalisation of Australian childhood
A couple of weeks back, in my local secondhand bookshop, I found an original copy of Gough Whitlam’s policy speech delivered at Blacktown Civic Centre on 13 November 1972.

But in fact it is the official police report on one of the most infamous crime cases ever and was written by a senior detective nearly half a century ago.
Love, disaster and the songs of Taylor Swift
It’s appropriate that Taylor Swift flew into Australia a few days after Valentine’s Day.
Genomic evidence for supergene control of Darwin′s 'complex marriage arrangement' - the tristylous floral polymorphism
Abstract Tristyly is a sexual polymorphism characterized by three flower morphs with reciprocal stigma and anther heights controlled by two epistatically interacting diallelic loci (S and M), hypothesized to be supergenes. Chromosome-level genome assemblies of Eichhornia paniculata identified the S- and M-loci.
‘We have listened to the community’: hating and imprisoning children in twenty-first-century Australia
It’s not news that imprisoning and torturing children is now commonplace in Australia. We have a long history of it, and the revelation in 2023 that a thirteen-year-old child with a disability had been held in solitary confinement for weeks in a Queensland youth detention centre, is not surprising — and neither is the Queensland government’s suspension of the Human Rights Act so that children can continue to be tortured in this way.
Everything is evidence: the persistence of QAnon
Paranoid political theories have become divided into two realms; the insane but true, and the insane but false. However, it is becoming increasingly difficult to know which one we are inhabiting as they move closer and closer together. There are no random accidents anymore. There are only malign impersonal forces that we cannot control and try to dictate every detail of our lives. Everyone knows this.
The death of David Graeber
The death of David Graeber affected me more than I would have expected, and I want to think about why that is. After all, 2020 has been so full of death and loss. Last century, the Russian poet Natalya Gorbanyevskaya wrote about ‘My own twentieth century, where there are more dead than graves than to put them in’, and two decades into the twenty-first we’re well into an accumulation of our own unique collection of previously unimaginable horrors.

Militant care in a time of atrocity
In his landmark book The Nazi Doctors, the American psychiatrist Robert Jay Lifton carefully and precisely describes the process of psychological ‘doubling’ that facilitates the ‘psychic numbing and denial’ necessary for someone to occasionally behave altruistically while still being the perpetrator or enabler of atrocity.

What COVID-19 tells us about capitalism
COVID-19 has made it apparent that some things are of no use whatsoever: the Olympics; cruise ships; millionaire sportspeople playing games to profit billionaires; blockbuster movie releases; mass tourism and a hundred-and-one other baubles and fripperies associated with a valorised bourgeois existence.

On burning forests
This is the second time I’ve been part of a climate emergency. The first was in 2017 when the town of Lismore in Widjabul country in northern New South Wales was hit by catastrophic floods. It was a flood that couldn’t happen. Lismore is no stranger to floods, the colonisers having built the town on a floodplain at the confluence of two rivers which, unusually, then flow inland.

Skyfall and Bond’s psychotic misogyny
When the Queen met James Bond during the Olympics, it was broadcast live as a real world event. This suggests that the British believe that either Bond is real or that the Queen is imaginary. The new Bond blockbuster Skyfall, is an extraordinary entry in the Bond canon, and in the portrayal of misogyny. Skyfall has been criticised for not being more up-to-date in its portrayal of women and also praised for being more respectful of women.
