The Village Playbox presents "The Philadelphia Story"
Published by New Jersey Stage originally published: 10/06/2026 (HADDON HEIGHTS, NJ) -- The Village Playbox presents The Philadelphia Story by Philip Barry across three weekends from November 6-21, 2026 at the First Presbyterian Church of Haddon Heights. This smash Broadway comedy, about an eventful wedding weekend at the estate of a wealthy American family, inspired an Oscar-winning film and the hit musical High Society.

Why Does Everything Need a Glow-Up? Why does everything have to have a make-over? We seem to live in a time where everything has to be updated and I’m not sure that’s a good idea. The latest case that’s triggered me is that of Aunt Bessie. It’s the brand of frozen Yorkshire puddings that make you feel like you’re having a proper roast. There are many factors that I’d consider in my approval of a pudding.

The best of hands
I was deeply saddened today when I read that Pat Clark had passed away. I spent eleven years with her on the Mad River Valley Ambulance Service. I remember one time responding Code 3 (lights and siren) to a call, I was driving and Pat was crew chief. As we passed Hap’s, the vehicle in front of us would not yield, and I exclaimed horse manure! Pat’s response was “don’t say that!” due to her and Dave’s love of horses and the associated need to keep their stalls clean.

Complaining about the postal service is like the baby brother of weather-based chat. It’s a British pastime. So I was delighted to read about Paul Edwards. As a new father he ordered Mother & Baby magazine for parenting advice. We could point out he should have bought Father & Baby magazine but that’s probably just a pamphlet saying, “It’s not about you. Shush!” That magazine, brimming with tips for parents, arrived last Friday. The only problem is he ordered it in 2007.

A Bluetooth Replacement for Willpower We have spent decades making fridges smarter. I don’t know why. You see many people who would lose a battle of wits to a standard toaster, but we are where we are. We now have cameras inside the fridge so you can check what you need from the supermarket, without having to remember. There’s AI that suggests recipes based on what’s on the shelves, so you don’t have to think. It’s not simply a case of making fridges smarter, we’re also making ourselves thicker.

An Apple A Day Keeps The Doctor Away Do you worry about AI ending humanity? What’s your particular worry? Is it killer robots, autonomous weapons, and a general sense that we are building something that will eventually decide it doesn’t need us? It turns out there’s a new way it could end us. We might just ask ChatGPT if our rash looks infected and die of something preventable instead.
Swatch watch drop sparks queues and chaos across Britain
2 1/1 Do you fancy a new watch? A collaboration between Swatch and Audemars Piguet has been the hot item. For just £335 you can get a limited edition Royal Pop watch, but you do have to win your round of Squid Games. Audemars Piguet is one of the most prestigious watchmakers in the world. A proper AP watch costs somewhere between a decent second-hand car and a small house. The bad news is that it still measures normal, cheap-ass seconds, minutes and hours.

There is a reassuring predictability to human behaviour. Every few years, someone releases a limited-edition something, and a portion of the population decides that being first in the queue is worth any cost, including their weekend, their family and their dignity. The new iPhone, the new Harry Potter, they have all seen normal looking people turn into mad campers. This week’s episode involved a collaboration between Swatch and Audemars Piguet.

Airports are stressful places. The queues, the noise, the fear that your suitcase is currently enjoying a solo holiday in Malaga. But now there’s a new way to glide through the chaos: simply declare yourself neurodivergent and pop on a sunflower lanyard. It can get you fast boarding and VIP lounge access. The sunflower scheme was created to help people with hidden disabilities such as dementia, Crohn’s disease and epilepsy. A discreet way to signal that you might need extra support. A lovely idea.

Here we are again. We wake to the news of an attempted assassination of Donald Trump. Depending on how you count it we’re up to two or three now. It’s becoming a pattern. You assume our better nature will come out and everyone will condemn such an act. It’s an assumption that doesn’t always hold. After the shooting of Charlie Kirk I was shocked by the comments I saw on some social media.

A quick visit to a card shop will prove that we celebrate too much these days. Birthdays and Christmas are fine but Easter cards feel a bit weird. Grandparents’ Day isn’t a real event and you don’t need to send a card when someone passes their driving test. They’d rather have the money to help out with the petrol. Have you heard of Palentine’s Day? It’s February 13th and is when you can send a card to celebrate a platonic friendship.
Thank You John Hilderbrand
It was refreshing to read John Hilderbrand’s commentary in the April 9 issue of The Valley Reporter. Thank you for speaking up. I find it interesting how many Vermonters and Americans have been convinced to hate an individual person with such vitriol. There was a time in the Valley when there was a visible opposition to vaccinations, but when Covid came along it seemed like most Vermonters couldn’t get enough mRNA injected into their system.

I’ve always thought of Waitrose as the posh supermarket. It’s where people don’t just buy milk, they buy “Essential Organic Semi-Skimmed” from a cow that probably has private healthcare. The kind of place where the loudest noise is usually someone tutting at a slightly overpriced sourdough. Turns out their famous middle-class civility has limits, and those limits come in the shape of a chocolate Easter egg.

Are you ready to save the planet? I think that’s why the new recycling rules are being introduced. I’m sure there must be some reason for them. Defra has just launched its grand new scheme: “Simpler Recycling”. It’s the same kind of “simplifying” you get from whoever thinks a 400-page toaster manual is user-friendly. The stated goal is to end the dreaded “postcode lottery” of bin collections. Now, wherever you live, you can be equally confused about where to put a greasy pizza box.

The key to great leadership is the ability to prioritise. You stare at the list, cost of living crisis, collapsing social care, high streets that are now just vape shops and dodgy American sweet shops, and you pick what actually matters. Labour-run Southampton City Council appears to have found its hill to die on. Or rather, its Itchen Bridge, which it wants to light up in rainbow colours. Firstly, Itchen Bridge sounds like something I’d see the GP with.

Here’s a worrying example of life on benefits. According to the BBC, Catherine Wieland had been claiming disability benefits for years. She insisted she was completely housebound with a chronic anxiety. She couldn’t wash or dress herself. All hope seemed lost. Then she went on a holiday to Mexican and was spotted on zip wires going snorkelling, the works. I know what you’re thinking, “It’s a miracle! She’s cured.

If you’re reading this on your phone I should apologise. New research has found that we lose five days of sleep a year because we are on our phones. It’s believable. I am a temperate man, but even I find myself having a quick check of Instagram reels before bed and then finding it’s 3am and I have spent ages watching videos of people getting injured at the gym. The algorithm knows me well. I enjoy seeing anyone who thinks a home pull-up bar in a doorway will end well finding out the truth.

I know people who don’t understand technology can often fear it but the people who really understand technology are not helping the situation. While many worry that AI will threaten humanity, the experts researching it keep doing creepy things. The latest is from Australia where a team of scientists have linked up human brain cells and taught them how to play the computer game Doom. That’s like the plot of a dystopian sci-fi film. These scientists must be doing it deliberately.
