Opinion: Nova Scotia's capped assessment program brought in for a reason
Firstly, though, I see little mention of why the CAP was truly instituted in the first place; that being, to help those who were living in their homes stay in those very homes, in the face of ballooning assessments. Families such as ours live on a fixed-income pension that doesn’t keep up with the consumer price index. That’s a given. So, careful scrutiny must be given to every dollar that comes in and goes out to try to maintain a balance of sorts. And that’s OK.
Opinion: Take long way round to avoid roundabouts in Nova Scotia

The importance of radio prep: Ultimate Aussie music and pop culture book out now
“These are the books I wished were in the studio when I was on air,” says Steve Woods as he thumbs through the latest volume of his For The Record series. And, at more than 475 pages long, it’s his biggest book yet. As The Days Go By compliments the two earlier releases Australian Pop Culture 1964-2017 and Classic Hit & Urban Myths, all lovingly compiled by Woods, a radio industry insider with more than 35 years’ experience, both on-air and in programming and management.
How the Tech-Enabled Workplace Can Create Better Hybrid Experiences
How can we design workspaces that benefit everyone, regardless of whether they have a seat at the conference room table? In film, the way that dialogues are shot and edited can make or break a scene. Engrossing conversations can transfix or confuse, depending on how you, as the audience, are witnessing the scene unfold. The same is true of how we view and engage with content in virtual calls, and conference set-ups.

LD Book Club: What Is Lighting Design? A Genealogy Of People And Ideas
What Is Lighting Design? A Genealogy Of People And Ideas is a loving treatment of theater design through the ages; it traces the origins of modern lighting as the craft moves from the hands of “competent technicians” to those who will lay the foundation of a new approach that demands artistry beyond illumination. Written by Michael Chybowski, the book includes an amazing Genealogy of American Lighting Designers.

Sight-Seeing: When justice becomes personal
02 March 2022 STEVE WOODS If I am totally honest, I’ve been trying to hold the Ukraine crisis at arms-length. I haven’t been able to face the endless news bulletins, breaking stories, political commentary and over-full Twitter feed! It’s not because I don’t care. Quite the opposite. It’s because I care too much. Faces of the those caught up in the Ukraine conflict: people who have fled Ukraine stand at a temporary camp in Przemysl, Poland, on 28th February. Okay, Who Made the King City Truck Stop Area Bomb Threat?
It was at least 104 degrees in the Mid-Columbia yesterday, and some dingleberry thought it might be a nice day for a bomb threat. About 8 o'clock in the morning on Tuesday (6/1), Pasco Police responded to the King City Truck Stop area, where there was a bomb threat at a construction business. Who done it? Disgruntled worker? Somebody who dislikes construction? What's the reason for a friggen bomb threat at a construction company?
Keep Icy Cool with Your Personal Air Conditioner
Finally, we get some nice relief from the heat this weekend! It sucks that it'll be windy as we make the transition, but I'll take that over the 105-degree day we had on Wednesday, that's for sure! So here's a question: Are you tired of cooling the entire house when you're only using one room at a time? With triple-digit temps returning to the Mid-Columbia (you know it won't be long), maybe you'd like to drop the A/C bill down a bit and try this DIY personal air conditioner.

Mid-Columbia Wind is Tomorrow Coming with Major Fire Danger Original
Dry enough for ya? It'll be so nice to get some heat relief starting tomorrow and into the weekend, but things might actually be getting worse if fire gets into the mix. A FIRE WEATHER WATCH will be in effect tomorrow morning (6/4) through tomorrow evening. A 'watch' is one step away from a 'warning.' If things get worse, it will be upgraded to a warning. A Fire Weather Watch means our area is getting prime for fires...that means low humidity and very dry conditions.
Cool Down! How to Make a Home Made Neck Cooler
With temps in the Mid-Columbia reaching 105 today, you might find something like this very, very useful. I do have the neck cooler style that is made from imitation chamois material, and it works well. But this DIY neck cooler has me fascinated because it will hold moisture longer. And I love that she took the shortcut of no-sewing, but you can sew one if you'd like to make it more permanent.
Not All Campgrounds Open This Weekend, Check First Here
If you're heading to the mountains for some Memorial Day weekend fun, you might want to check to see if your favorite campground is open first.Lots of areas will be accessible, but not all campgrounds are open, according to a post from the US Forest Service (below). Not all of it has to do with covid -19 either. The late-season snow has some roads, trails, and campgrounds unfit for this weekend. Check out the Facebook post below from the city of Walla Walla.

Kennewick Ripper On the Loose - Outdoor Adventure Game
Every time I look for something around the house, my wife tells me that I'm no detective because it's usually right in front of me. I watch a lot of true-crime TV shows, and she usually figures out who did it long before I do. But if you think you were cut out to be a detective, here's your chance to prove it! An outdoor adventure game is coming to Kennewick in October, and you can sign up for it now. Can you find the Kennewick Ripper?
16 Year Old Kennewick Cat NEEDS A HOME
This is Huxley. He's a 16-year-old Devon Rex who lives with a very loving owner in Kennewick. Unfortunately, his owner has her own serious health issues and can no longer care for him. Believe it or not, the word that Huxley needed a new home came to me from clear across the United States. A dear friend of mine (and excellent radio personality) in Pennsylvania is good friends with the lady who owns Huxley in Richland. In fact, she adopted Huxley's bestie, Pax, the cute dog in the photo below.
Super Blood Moon Eclipse Happens Early Tomorrow Morning
So what happens when you get a supermoon and a total lunar eclipse? Why, a Super Blood Moon Eclipse, that's what! There hasn't been a total lunar eclipse in a couple of years. A lunar eclipse is when the Earth's shadow completely covers the moon. This is not a solar eclipse, so you can look directly at it without eye protection. A blood moon is the funky orange color that occurs from this. A supermoon is when the moon is closer to the Earth than usual and therefore appears larger than usual.

Confirmed: Tri-Cities Boat Races are BACK ON! Original
After initially canceling the Tri-City Water Follies for 2021, there's good news for boat race fans...IT'S BACK ON! After Washington State announced the new covid-19 guidelines, boat race organizers decided to take a second look at the initial decision to cancel this year's event. Since this event takes a ton of planning, most of it would've been worked out by now. Now it's a scramble and things will look a bit different than in years past.
Thrift Stores Do Not Want Your Trash
In a recent story from KEPR Action News, it is reported that thrift stores like Goodwill don't want your trash any longer. Now, I'm aware of the rich CEOs that run these companies, and how they promote the whole thing as giving people jobs and doing the community a favor. Personally, I don't care if the CEO is a millionaire, if I can find something way cool for pennies on the dollar, I'm down with that.
Pasco Police Need Help Identifying Rapscallion [Photos]
Rapscallions and hooligans. The Tri-Cites is full of them (so is Hermiston if you follow Hermiston Police on Facebook). Please don't confuse rapscallions with scallywags, or hooligans with hellions. Each has its own level of despicableness. (Wow...no squiggly line under despicableness, so I guess it's actually a word!) The problem with Rapscallions and hooligans is, they don't realize that their petty crime is not so petty for the victim. In fact, it's a serious day-ruiner.

8 Year Old Moses Lake Pellet Gun Shooting Victim Identified
This is such a sad story because I think BB and pellet guns are a great way to teach youngsters how to be responsible firearm owners and users. When I was a kid, I was allowed a BB and pellet rifle, but only after I took a hunter's safety course. I remember some of my cousins having BB gun shoot-outs and they're lucky they didn't get seriously hurt. I never ever pointed my pellet gun at a person. Most of the guns that you cock once won't leave more than a welt (but can easily take out an eye).

Pasco Apt. Building Arson Suspect Caught with Propane Torch
I wonder what's going through one's mind when they decide to set an apartment door on fire. Pasco Police thought maybe he was trying to smoke out the occupants so he could confront them, but none of the occupants even knew the dude. We've had a drastic drop in temperatures, maybe he was trying to keep warm. Yeah, no. Maybe the devil made him do it. Maybe he's simply your everyday pyromaniac. You know that feeling you get when you've successfully started a campfire on a cold, damp morning?

Ticks Might be Worse This Year - My Funny Tick Story
I saw a Facebook post on Benton City's Real News and Information where one lady said she's seen a lot more ticks this year than most. Campers generally need to be more aware than we do in the Tri-Cities, but anywhere there are trees or wooded areas, there can be ticks. Growing up in Montana, mom used to pull ticks off of us kids and our dogs all the time in the summer. She was an expert at spotting them in our hair before they could grab hold in our scalps.
Richland Sushi Spot Can't Serve Sushi Now Because... Original
A state-wide sushi chef shortage? When I first heard about a sushi chef shortage in the entire state of Washington, I thought it must be an exaggeration. Then I ran into this article from KEPR-TV. The timing of this is horrible because, for some reason, I'm not really in the mood for sushi in the colder months. When the weather starts heating up, that's when I want sushi. Weird, right? But one of my favorite spots is Shogun Terriyaki & Sushi which is just off the by-pass in Richland.

Yogurt E.coli Outbreak Includes Benton County Original
I remember when I was a kid visiting my Grandma in Yakima. That woman loved her yogurt. This is back when yogurt was just yogurt...you added your own fruit if you wanted it. That's my recollection at least, because she always had a fridge full of plain yogurt. Naturally, when a kid sees an adult enjoying something that resembles ice cream, you have to ask for a bite. That was the last time yogurt touched my lips for years! Now I love it and so do most folks, I think. But be warned, yogurt lovers, E.
Tri-City Boat Race Weekend~~~BACK ON? Original
After the announcement that Washington State will be fully open by June 30th, the folks at the Tri-City Water Follies are working hard to try and put a show together now. Normally, event director Kathy Powell would've already spent weeks lining up vendors, communicating with race and airshow officials, and preparing for the many media appearances she always does to promote the 2021 Water Follies. It didn't look good for 2021 until the recent announcement.
Tri-Cities Thieves Are Still After Your Catalytic Converters
With all the catalytic converter thefts happening in the Mid-Columbia (and the nation), you may have heard that the reason thieves want them so bad is because of the precious metals they contain. And there's one less thief loose on the streets as you'll see in the post below from the Franklin County Sheriff's Office. But what do the thieves do with those precious metals? I found a video on Youtube (below) that explained it well for my non-mechanical brain.
Pasco Police Want to Wash Your Car this Sunday
A dirty car isn't a crime, but why chance it? The Pasco Jr. Bulldogs Football program is in need of funds and it's Pasco Police to the rescue! Officers will be teaming up with students for a fundraiser car wash this Sunday (5/16) from noon-4 p.m. in the parking lot of Subway at 22nd & Court St. Hey, how much will it cost to make your ride shine? The donation of your choice will do. If you like your car clean all the time like I do, I have two words for you: California Duster.
Dead Body Found Floating Near Blue Bridge This Morning
So there you are, a happy Kennewick Parks and Rec worker, loving your beautiful Friday morning down by the river, and then HOLYMOTHEROFGOD you spot a dead body floating in the river! Accident? Murder? Suicide? Nobody knows just yet as this is still under investigation. KEPR-TV reports that authorities have said the body is that of a male, approx. 20-30 years of age. KEEP READING: 15 Natural Ways to Improve Your Sleep Goosebumps and other bodily reactions, explained
My West Richland Yard Suddenly Has Gophers
From the 'WTF Department', I've lived in this house for almost a decade and gophers suddenly show up? My wife did a little research and ran across a post where someone else was talking about how gophers are moving around in West Richland due to all the new construction taking their fields away. But our neighborhood hasn't had any new construction nearby for quite a while, so I'm wondering how far these little fellas traveled to settle in my yard.

Hermiston Spring Bazaar is ON for This Saturday
As you hear about more things opening up and events taking place, you can add the Hermiston Spring Bazaar to that list. It will be at the Hermiston Community Center parking lot on South highway 395. The Hermiston Spring Bazaar features artists from throughout the Pacific Northwest. When I use the term artist, I always think of somebody who paints. But there will be so much more than that.
Richard Sherman Fan Wanted by Pasco Police Original
While talk circulates that Richard Sherman is entertaining thoughts of returning to the Seahawks, someone who hasn't retired his #25 Seahawks shirt is now wanted by Pasco Police. This dude is accused of stealing from Home Depot in Pasco. I wonder what he supposedly stole? I don't imagine he made it out the door with 10 sheets of plywood and a load of 2x4's. If he tried that, I'm sure people in the parking lot would've tackled him long before security could. Lumber prices are crazy right now.
Is Tri-Cities Being Invaded by....Snails and Slugs? Original
In a recent thread that I found on Facebook in the "All About Tri-Cities" group, a woman who recently moved here from Wenatchee was wondering how to get rid of all the snails and slugs that are ruining her plants. My first reaction was...we have snails and slugs here? When I was just knee-high to a grasshopper (as Grandpa used to say), I lived in Tacoma and believe me, my mom went through a lot of salt killing all those slugs.
Pasco Man Mounts GoPro Camera to Watch Robin Eggs Hatch
Spring is very much in full swing in the Mid-Columbia and robin sightings are always the proof. While scrolling through "All About Tri-Cities" on Facebook, I ran across this video from Jim Zim's Youtube channel. Jim Lives in Pasco and has quite the following on Youtube with nearly a half-million subscribers (I'm one now, too). He creates family fun videos about everything from his passion for model trains to cocker spaniels to cruise ship vacations. His model train videos are a kick to watch.
Sunnyside Lotto Winner Almost Threw the Ticket Away!
I usually scan my lottery tickets on my Washington Lottery mobile app. If it's a loser, many of those tickets can be logged in as points. I don't have enough points yet to purchase something cool, but I think it's mostly lotto swag. I've won $200 a couple times, but mostly it's just a few bucks if I win anything at all. After my lotto app tells me I've won $4 or whatever, I take it to a convenience store and re-invest.
Bluebird Watching in Bickleton, WA Original
The first and only time my wife and I went to Bickleton, it was too late in the summer and most of the bluebirds had moved on. That's why we're gearing up for a trip to Bickleton very soon! It kind of out in the middle of nowhere and if you find driving relaxing like I do, then you're in for an enjoyable trip. It's so nice and peaceful and feels good to get away from heavy traffic.
KPD Save Passed Out Woman at Clover Island Boat Launch
I'm willing to bet that the officers who broke the passenger side window of a car with a passed-out woman inside don't consider it anything more than just doing their job. I call them heroes. Police blared sirens and air horns and she wouldn't budge. That's pretty scary. If you've ever had alcohol poisoning (shamefully, I have) then you know that there's a high probability you're close to knocking on death's door.
PNW Raised American Wagyu Beef Taste Test
Ever since I saw a Youtube video of a Japanese chef preparing Wagyu beef for a customer (below), I wanted to try it and see if it's worth the $$$. You've probably seen Wagyu for sale at Costco and everyone knows it's not cheap. The really good stuff (there are different rankings and grades based on marbling) can cost upwards of $200 per lb. I was shopping in Yoke's/West Richland yesterday and happened upon American Wagyu fillet mignon steaks for sale at $22.99/lb.
States Cancelling Fed's Unemployment Pay Boost to Get Workers Bac
A friend of mine owns his own business and is having a very hard time getting his workers to come back since they can make more money staying at home and collecting unemployment. Restaurants here in the Tri-Cities are struggling due to a shortage of workers for the same reason. NOW HIRING signs are popping up everywhere. Montana has said NO MORE to the federal unemployment boost to get workers back into their jobs. Will Washington, Oregon, and Idaho quickly follow?
