For more than five minutes Tuesday, Aug. 11, hundreds of people waited under a large, air-conditioned event tent awaiting the landing of FedEx Flight 1944 at Memphis International Airport. As people waited, Richard Smith, a FedEx Corp. senior executive and son of the late founder Frederick W. Smith, made it clear to those attending: the plane was running on time.
