Hillsborough County's DOGE committee targets $678 million in spending

Hillsborough County's medical care program for the poor and school zone speeding cameras could be on the chopping block. The programs are two of many that could be cut as part of an estimated $678 million the county's DOGE - or Department of Government Efficiency - liaison committee says could be trimmed. That would be about 6% of the county's $12 billion budget. The biggest cut would be $297 million from the indigent health care program.

Outdoor water restrictions are extended as the drought continues

If you think it hasn't rained much recently - you're right. Outdoor watering restrictions were extended Tuesday for most of West Central Florida. That means unless your city or county has stricter hours in effect, you can only water outdoors from 8 p.m. until 4 a.m. The Modified Phase III “Extreme” Water Shortage will go through Oct. 1, or until steady rains begin. The Southwest Florida Water Management District says the region ran an 11-inch rainfall deficit in May, compared to historical averages.

Clearwater hands over a downtown street to Church of Scientology

The Church of Scientology is now closer to expanding its "spiritual headquarters" in downtown Clearwater. That comes after city council members narrowly voted recently to vacate a city street. The 3-2 vote handed the church one block of South Garden Avenue. It's next to the church's Flag Service Organization and is planned to become the site of a new event hall. Council members voting for the move were David Allbritton, Ryan Cotton and Mike Mannino.
