Remembering Maria Cranor, rock climber, physicist shaped by time as Berkeley student during Free Speech Movement
Maria Boone Cranor — luminary female rock climber, co-founder of Black Diamond Equipment, and lecturer in physics at The University of Utah — died of cancer on Jan. 15, 2022, at the Salt Lake City home of her great friends April and Dale Goddard. She was 76 years old. Maria grew up in San Francisco, the oldest of five. From the start she was the leader of the pack — bold, adventurous and creative. Her siblings followed her everywhere, even when it might have been wiser to stay home.

Berkeley parking laws will force RV dwellers to move on
Aftertwo-plus years in the same location, Berkeley Friends on Wheels — a community of houseless people who live in vehicles — are being forced to move along. In early October, city of Berkeley employees chalked the tires of all of the vehicles parked on the corner of Eighth and Harrison streets in West Berkeley, which means they had 72 hours to move their vehicles before potentially being towed. Many were also “red-tagged,” meaning they had 72 hours to move on.

Thank goodness we have evolved beyond such primitive thinking!” The narrator pauses. A barely discernable “photo” is shown of a woman supposedly from the 21st century. She wore face paint on her lips and had a nose piercing.
