Africa: Islands Are Solutions - the Case for Island-Ocean Coalitions
Seattle, Washington / SAN Diego, California / Austin, Texas — As the world confronts escalating climate impacts, biodiversity loss, and ocean degradation, islands stand as critical test cases--not just as sites of vulnerability, but as living laboratories of resilience, restoration, and innovation. Too often, they are framed as victims of global circumstances, awaiting salvation from external forces.
Nancy Knowlton, marine biologist: ‘Scientists have to speak out against Trump’
Nancy Knowlton, 75, was born in Evanston, Illinois, but spent nearly every summer of her childhood by the Atlantic Ocean. Her grandparents lived on the Long Island Sound between Connecticut and New York, and it was there she discovered that if you took a snail out of its shell, it can’t get back in. Her desire to observe, learn, discover and understand led her to graduate with a degree in biology from Harvard University, and to get her doctorate in zoology from the University of California.

The superior explanatory power of models that admit trade-offs in moral judgment and decision-making | Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences
Skip to main content “Philosophy is not a theory but an activity” – Ludwig Wittgenstein The value of any scientific model is a function of how well that model approximates a corresponding reality. With the publication of Guzmán et al. (1), the field of moral cognition has embarked on a paradigm shift—one that brings models of moral cognition much closer to the corresponding reality they purport to explain.
Evidence of Biological Self-Organization in Spatial Patterns of a Common Tropical Alga
No AccessNatural History Note Abstract Tropical reef communities contain spatial patterns at multiple scales, observable from microscope and satellite alike. Many of the smaller-scale patterns are generated physiologically (e.g., skeletal structures of corals at <1-m scale), while some of the larger patterns have been attributed to scale-dependent feedbacks (e.g., spur and groove reefs at 10–100-m scales).
