Winter Light by Ted Kooser Read by Sue Ellen Thompson Original
Winter Light What is it about this late afternoon light in December, with its absolute stillness, its blues, its few browns, its deep evergreen greens and its scattered patches of white, that somehow seems to know it’s a Sunday, this light that’s come far, low over the fields, now at rest, bright in the treetops, with no ambition to reach any farther into the day. Soon, in the silvery dusk, it will gather some shadows about it and leave.
Taking down the Tree by Jane Kenyon Read by Sue Ellen Thompson
Taking Down the Tree by Jane Kenyon “Give me some light!” cries Hamlet’s uncle midway through the murder of Gonzago. “Light! Light!” cry scattering courtesans. Here, as in Denmark, it’s dark at four, and even the moon shines with only half a heart. adsasd The ornaments go down into the box: the silver spaniel, My Darling on its collar, from Mother’s childhood in Illinois; the balsa jumping jack my brother and I fought over, pulling limb from limb.
Cold War hangovers and why there is no Asian NATO
As some consider whether a NATO-style body could work in the Asia Pacific, security policymakers must look to how the region was shaped by its last effort to form one, Sue Thompson writes. The recent summit of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) in Madrid saw the invitation list include the so-called ‘Asia-Pacific Four’ – Australia, New Zealand, South Korea, and Japan.
NonVerbal Learning Disorder
There is no question that most scholastic accomplishments are measured and defined through language-based communication. Yet, it has been found that more than 65% of all communication is actually conveyed nonverbally. We are all familiar with "non-verbal communication," but few professionals have been specifically trained to look for deficits in this area.
Withdrawal from Afghanistan and the ghosts of Vietnam
The Vietnam War analogy has appeared once again as the United States withdraws its forces from Afghanistan – Sue Thompson explores how this might affect future American foreign policy. Recent scenes from Kabul airport of desperate people trying to escape the Taliban takeover has resulted in parallels being drawn with the scenes in Saigon on 29-30 April 1975, when the United States undertook a massive evacuation operation by helicopter.

India in Asia: ASEAN, Japan and the Right Balance - AIIA
India has been taking steps to become a much more visible player across the entire Indo-Pacific region, extending from the maritime space to the west all the way to the east. This is both through its involvement in Asia’s most central regional institutions and through deepened ties with Japan. India’s ‘Look East’ policy of the 1990s declared a priority to strengthen ties with Southeast and East Asia.
ASEAN Turns Fifty: Reflections on the Origins of Southeast Asian Regionalism - AIIA
On 8 August, the Association of Southeast Asian Nations reaches its half-century. Fifty years ago, the inauguration of ASEAN ushered in the beginning of regionalism in Southeast Asia. The 1967 ASEAN declaration was just one initiative on a long list of attempts to achieve regional cooperation and it called for a collaborative approach to economic growth, social progress and cultural development. What was missing in this declaration was a call for security and stability.
The Writer's Almanac with Garrison Keillor
We rented a room from an English violinist and shared the kitchen that filled the second floor. We had until the lessons downstairs were finished to cook and eat our dinner before he started his. Married now and beginning to show, I took the train to London every day and joined the crowd perched on folding camp-stools at the Tate.
The Writer's Almanac with Garrison Keillor
The night before my older sister’s wedding, my mother and I sat up late hand-stitching a little cloud of netting to the brim of each bridesmaid’s hat To be alone with her was so rare I couldn’t think of what I had to say. We worked in silence beneath the chandelier until it was almost daybreak. Soon I’d have a room of my own and she would only be cooking for six. We drifted among the wreaths we had sewn, nursing quietly on our fingertips. That she still had me was a comfort, I think.
The Writer's Almanac with Garrison Keillor
Along with his two surviving sisters, the five of us divided up the week, so that one of us would call my father every night at dinnertime. My night was Wednesday, and after we discussed the weather, and he expressed amazement that New Hampshire could have record-breaking rains while Maryland clung stubbornly to drought, he’d ask if I had spoken with my daughter lately.
