Stepping into Costco for the very first time, one could be forgiven for thinking the end of the world is nigh. On my maiden outing last month, other shoppers looked like they were stocking their doomsday bunkers, heaving trolleys loaded with pallets of mineral water, slabs of meat the size of a small child and enough toilet roll to supply an army regiment. In truth, I arrived at Costco’s vast Southampton outpost already sceptical.
