Regardless if the company is focused on subscriptions, ad revenue, or both, newsletters have become a leading source of revenue and sales leads. However, the novelty of e-mail has worn off. In fact, most people today have a contentious relationship with their inbox.
USA Today shares 4 tips on creating Black History Month content
February is Black History Month in the Untied States. While we celebrate Black culture throughout the year, this month is set aside for special reflection and storytelling. No one knows that more that USA Today’s enterprise editor for racism and history, Nichelle Smith. Smith has been at Gannett/USA Today since 2003, when she joined after a stint at Black Entertainment Television and the Smithsonian. She never imagined she would still be here, nearly two decades later.
USA Today Network Ventures uses 3-pronged content approach for events
As media companies continue to experiment and test to grow revenue, live events are becoming a bigger piece of the overall strategy. When Jason Taylor started what was then called GateHouse Live, the goal was to be another revenue stream for newsrooms. He is a longtime newspaper leader and saw an opportunity to grow this side of the business. Fast forward five years, and we are now USA Today Network Ventures, the event arm of Gannett, one of the largest newspaper companies in the United States.

5 Atlanta Black-Owned Businesses Founded By Black Women
Black women in Atlanta are doing some amazing things relating to fashion, entertainment, real estate, non-profits, and entrepreneurship.“Sistas are doing it for themselves” as the old Eurythmics song goes and Black Mecca is leading the charge for Black women taking the entrepreneurial jump. Therefore, in no particular order here are five Atlanta based businesses that were founded by Black women. 1.
The Politics of Being a Black Woman and Childfree
Black and childfree. Two words more blasphemous than cursing in church on Sunday morning. If you Google “childfree” you’ll find tons of articles written by women boasting about their childfreedom. Yet, one voice is amiss in this ever-growing community of the voluntarily barren; Black women. It’s no surprise that Black women are missing from this admittedly feminist narrative. Feminism lacks blackness in general, but clinging to this as the cause would be shortsighted.
BLOG: Civility Counts goes state-wide, encourages positive discussion
It's been a big week for Community Civility Counts. On Monday, Civility Counts in the Classroom had its second class. It went well, read about it here. The next day, I jumped in the car with my executive editor, Bob Heisse, and headed down to Indianapolis to watch history. Sen. Lonnie Randolph, D-East Chicago, had a special resolution to present to the Indiana Senate. That resolution, SR-6, was about us.

REVIEW: Rascal Flatts, Brothers Osborne and The Cadillac Three bring LakeShake to a close
Country LakeShake's last day of it's third year ended with a banjo — specifically a memorable banjo performance during Rascal Flatts' headlining set Sunday. I have had the opportunity to see Rascal Flatts a few times over the years, and they are always fantastic. Sunday was no different. If you get the opportunity to see them live, do it.
REVIEW: Dan + Shay, Craig Campbell, Miranda Lambert rock LakeShake day 2
It was a day of unusual, but great, covers at day two of the Country LakeShake Festival Saturday. The best of the day was Craig Campbell covering Lorde’s “Royals, with a country twang. Campbell’s whole set was strong. He drew a huge crowd for being a festival opener in the middle of the afternoon. He played his hits, including “Outskirts of Heaven, “Keep Them Kisses Comin,’ and “Fish. The best entire set of the day was Dan + Shay. Fired up about their single “How Not To,
REVIEW: Country LakeShake Day 1 with Big & Rich, Randy Houser and Thomas Rhett
It was a day of surprise guests to kick off Country LakeShake festival at Huntington Bank Pavilion at Northerly Island on Friday. What is so great about Big & Rich is that they will bring anyone on stage with them. Their shows never feel like it’s about them. It’s about having as much fun as possible and bringing attention to causes they feel strongly about – veterans and active duty military members.
Civility in the Classroom talks triggers with ninth graders at Steel City
Think, for a minute, of the words and non-verbal cues that set you off. Write them down in a list. Now, choose the one word, or one thing, that makes you the most mad. Write about the last time that word or thing happened. What was the situation? How did you react? What was the outcome? The students in our Civility in the Classroom program at Steel City Academy in Gary were asked to do those things this week. When their teacher Duane Krambeck told them to pick one, they almost all went to the same word.
Community Civility Counts to honor anti-bullying initiatives at World Civility Day
The National Institute for Civil Discourse (NICD) was established in May of 2011 after the tragic Tucson shooting which killed six people and wounded thirteen others including former Congresswoman Gabrielle Gifford. All were participating in a “Congress on your Corner” event, a fundamental act of democracy. The #ReviveCivility campaign is concerned about the rising incivility in the 2016 campaign.

REVIEW: Windy City Smokeout makes Chicago smell like heaven
In its fourth year, the Windy City Smokeout was on point. The BBQ wafted for blocks before you could even hear the bass drumming of the acts that hit the stage for three days. I tried several meaty treats, including the Memphis Walking Taco from Lillie's Q. It was spicy, but delicious. Made in an open pimento chips bag, they add pork, sauce and coleslaw. It was awesome. I also tried 17th Street BBQ's beef nachos. They were incredible. And Hogapalooza BBQ's cherry smoked pulled pork sandwich was epic.
Brett Kissel, a country music up-and-comer with a great story
Brett Kissel is going to be fine. The country music up-and-comer is good looking, earnest and just self-deprecating enough to be endearing. Not sure if you believe me? Kissel will perform at 2:50 p.m. Sunday at the Windy City Smokeout in Chicago.
Review: Phil Vassar wrecks the piano to the smell of meat at Smokeout
In it's fourth year, the Windy City Smokeout is on point. The BBQ wafts through the space, making the music only sound sweeter to the beat of roasting meat. On Friday night, I only had room to try one meaty treat, the Memphis Walking Taco from Lillie's Q. It was spicy, but delicious. Made in an open pimento chips bag, they add pork, sauce and coleslaw. It's awesome. My friend had a boring old pork sandwich, very uninspired, but said it was killer.

Great news for fans, Benjamin Francis Leftwich is finally touring again.Leftwich put out his debut album, “Last Smoke Before the Snowstorm,” in 2011, and toured heavily for three years. So hard, in fact, that he took two years off.Not just off the road, but off of music. Then this year, he announced a new album and a new tour."After The Rain," is due out Aug.

CHICAGO — Jason Aldean knows how to put on a show.Headlining the third and final day of Chicago’s Country LakeShake, held at FirstMerit Bank Pavilion at Northerly Island, Aldean was fired up Sunday evening. He played a wide arrange of hits, including “My Kinda Party,” “Dirt Road Anthem,” “She’s Country” and “The Truth.” Aldean looked great in a blue flannel with the sleeves cut off, jeans and a cowboy hat.One of the great things about him is that he doesn’t need a lot of flash.
REVIEW: Tim McGraw brings the house down at Chicago's LakeShake
CHICAGO — Tim McGraw wants us to be humble and kind. It's a great message, a great song and something we all could stand to remember now.McGraw headlined day two of Chicago’s Country LakeShake at FirstMerit Bank Pavilion at Northerly Island Saturday. He was clearly who everyone had come to see.During “I Like It, I Love It,” he let the audience sing all the choruses while he just sat back and smiled.
SUMMER MOORE: Community Civility Counts joins #ReviveCivility movement
During our World Civility Day celebration in April, Community Civility Counts brought in some key partners from across the nation that are doing great things in the name of civility. One of those groups is the National Institute for Civil Discourse, or NICD, based at The University of Arizona. At our event, a representative for the group spoke about their free training for politicians. We are hoping to get that going for the next Indiana session.
Review: Chicago's LakeShake packs 'em in on Day 1
Chicago's Country LakeShake Festival was packed for the first day of music Friday at FirstMerit Bank Pavilion at Northerly Island.Lady Antebellum headlined and put on a flashy show that included some major hits, including "American Honey," "Dancin' Away With My Heart," and "I Run To You." They also covered Justin Timberlake's new song of the summer, "Can't Stop The Feeling," with mixed results. The show felt scripted.

Review: Gregory Alan Isakov magical at Thalia Hall
"Dandelion Wine" is my favorite song by Gregory Alan Isakov. It's the song I play over, and over, and over. It's that song that comes with so much stuff, so much memory. On Monday I got to hear that song not only live, but with a "ghost orchestra" and at one of the most beautiful venues I've seen. It was magic. Isakov is on the the first part of an ambitious tour that will take him all over the world, from Lithuania to Amsterdam. But, he's in Chicago for one more day, so go get your ticket.
Gregory Alan Isakov adds symphony in new album, in Chicago next week
Even though he has three popular folk albums under his belt, Gregory Alan Isakov considers himself more of a writer than a musician."I write a lot," he said. "My main practice is writing prose or poems. And a few of the things I write end up worthy of music or songs. His newest album, "Gregory Alan Isakov with the Colorado Symphony," drops Friday. He will be at Chicago's Thalia Hall, 1807 South Allport St., Monday and Tuesday in support of it.

Civility in the Classroom: The influence of a young leader
This semester has flown by. Hard to believe we only have three Civility in the Classroom sessions left. I have learned so much. So much about ninth graders, about Gary, about Lighthouse, about teaching, about myself.I can't thank this incredible team of educators enough, including Lighthouse's Susie Choi, Erica Young and Martin DaCosta, and Steel City Academy's Katie Kirley. I owe them big time. I have no idea what the students will walk away with.
Civility in the Classroom: News literacy!
Last week was my turn to teach for the second time this semester. It wasn't nearly as scary, thank God. This week we focused on a subject near and dear to my heart: News literacy. Here's the video we showed from The News Literacy Project in Chicago. Lucky for me, a perfect example of news literacy happened on my Facebook page this week. A couple friends shared a this story about Demi Lavato getting flat tire in Gary.
Civility in the Classroom goes digital with Richard Leverett of AT&T
Sometimes good timing is all luck.We had planned for this week to be our look at digital civility in the Civility in the Classroom pilot program at Lighthouse College Prep Academy in Gary. What we didn't know, is the school would have an example of digital incivility this week as well. Our guest speaker was Richard Leverett, Director of External Affairs for AT&T.
Civility in the Classroom finishes up with 'Civility with Self'
As Lighthouse College Prep Academy's Civility in the Classroom leader Susie Choi said, "The students are getting sick of me talking."OK, we get it ninth graders. Internal work is tedious, even for adults. Luckily, the Civility with Self section is finishing up just as the students were done with it. On March 14, we did our last emotional trigger activity. The lesson was about perception vs. reality. From the lesson: "Perception is the state of being of becoming aware of something through the senses.
Review: Charles Kelley's solo album 'The Driver' delivers
It would be difficult to meet anyone who was alive in 2009 that didn’t hear Lady Antebellum’s mega-hit “Need You Now.”That song propelled the threesome into music history, earned a multitude of awards and quickly was followed by many more hits that lived in both country and pop. Their 2011 single, “Just a Kiss,” hit No. 1 on the adult contemporary charts. One of the voices responsible for that success released his first solo effort Monday.
BLOG: Civility in the classroom answers "what is civility?"
This week I found a definition of civility I think encompasses what we are trying to do with the Civility in the Classroom program.Civility is disagreeing without disrespect, seeking common ground as a starting point for dialogue about differences, listening past one’s preconceptions, and teaching others to do the same. Civility is the hard work of staying present even with those with whom we have deep-rooted and fierce disagreements. It is a necessary prerequisite for civic action.
BLOG: Civility in the Classroom brings in Black Lives Matter speaker
It was a great week for Community Civility Counts. On Tuesday, Sen. Lonnie Randolph introduced a special resolution in the Indiana Senate that passed unanimously.
BLOG: Civility Counts in Class kicks off with Laquan McDonald
This week was big for Civility Counts. On Monday, we kicked off our pilot classroom program at Lighthouse Academies in Gary. We started with two ninth grade classes, about 40 kids. We are focusing on Monday's "advisory" class time, which is similar to homeroom. I'm very excited and humbled by the teachers that have agreed to be involved.

GUEST COMMENTARY: Civility Counts in the classroom
The Community Civility Counts campaign is entering the classroom. We have partnered with Lighthouse Academies to create a template for schools to incorporate civility into their curriculum. Thanks to the enthusiastic staff of Lighthouse, a seed of an idea is becoming real. The plan is to survey the students at the beginning, with the hope of finding out their understanding of civility and openness to new ideas and people. The best part?
