National Comprehensive Cancer Network guidelines do not recommend routine genetic testing for women > 65 with newly diagnosed breast cancer. We performed a retrospective review of data from the Legacy Cancer Institute Tumor Registry of women with a new diagnosis of breast cancer between January 2017 and December 2022. Primary endpoint was the incidence of deleterious mutation. 4548 women with a diagnosis of breast cancer were identified. 2059/4548 (45.3%) were older than 65 at the time of diagnosis.
Over The Pass And Other Stories By: Susan Mary Malone
In the wonderful world of fiction writing, there are so many different types of genres and stories that virtually any reader will be able to find something that they enjoy. Even within the same genres, there are different approaches to writing which are really only limited by the author’s imagination. These great authors will grab words from the air and put them down on paper so that they are colorful, captivating, and intelligible.
Does Writing in Different Genres Work?
Writers, by their stock and trade, write. Most gravitate to writing in the genres that they prefer to read, but can of course be quite cable of penning other kinds of books. But does writing in different genres work? As a book editor, I’m posed this question at least weekly. The short answer? No. Well, why would that be? Looks like an author could cash in on writing many different genres, with many different audiences. Right? In theory, yes.
How New York should lock the clock: Don’t switch to daylight savings time, ditch it and stick with standard time
By Susan Kohl Malone, Freda Patterson and Anne Skeldon New York Daily News | Mar 04, 2020 | 12:00 PM (Catherine Lane (C) Catherine Lane 2017/Getty Images/iStockphoto) New York has joined the rally to “lock the clock,” or “ditch the switch” — ending the twice-a-year clock time change. Alabama, Arkansas, Florida, Nevada, Oregon and Washington have already passed such bills. Legislators in the Empire State propose to follow suit, making daylight savings time permanent.

5 Descriptive Writing Tips to Bring Your Novel to Life
Here lately, I’ve been seeing more and more writers bemoaning ‘show don’t tell.’ When you keep getting hammered over the head with something, there’s always a backlash, no? But when I get into the weeds of it with writers, the light bulb flicks on. Most of the resistance is due to a misunderstanding of it all, and when we discuss the descriptive writing tips to get you there, ahh! Then it all makes sense. The number-one complaint I hear is that this bogs down the story.
Six Writing Tips for a Mystery Novel
Many sub-categories fit under the Mystery umbrella—from Police Procedurals to Amateur Sleuths, from Romantic Suspense to Historicals to Cozies and Noirs. All are Mysteries, with different specs of course, but all fall under this wide tent. So what tips cover them when you’re writing a Mystery novel? No matter who pursues whom and how, some parameters stay the same in all. Here are 6 of them.
Critical Mindset Shifts | Malone Editorial | Critical Mindset Shifts
Don’t you love all those memes about what it means to be a writer? You know the ones—what my mom thinks I do, what my friends think I do, what I really do, etc. Anyone who’s been for a while in the writing trenches gets such a kick out of those! And, for a big reason. I would venture to say that we all—yes every one of us—came into the idea of writing starry-eyed with dreams. We had a talent. We had a dream. We were ready to become the next Hemingway (or whichever author you revered).
How to get Reviews as an Author
This week, we have a great guest post by award-winning author, Nina Romano, with a tutorial on garnering reviews and getting publicity/sales for your books. Her advice is priceless. Enjoy! Oh, and yes, I did meet her on Twitter 🙂 For a published or an unpublished author it can really be a challenge to obtain book reviews—you know those darling little things with stars and someone’s opinion of your book?
4 Ways to Deal With Rejection
Negative reviews and criticism. All writers face them, and these’re our most unfavorite parts of the process. From peer critique while in process, to those rejections from agents and publishers, to negative reviews once the book comes out, we deal with less-than-stellar comments about our work from here to eternity. And the funny thing is, no matter how many accolades we receive, those stinking negative ones stick with us.

Tipping Point By: Terry Tyler
by Terry Tyler Tipping Point By: Terry Tyler Have you ever truly considered how you would react to an apocalypse? How would you really respond to widespread destruction or disaster? Most human beings pride themselves on their inherent kind and benevolent nature. A unique human ability to live according to a strong sense of morality which has us look out for the welfare and well being of others.
5 Easy Tips to help Remove Passive Voice in Your Novel
Update: It has come to my attention that a handful of astute grammarians at the LA Times have taken issue with my definition of “passive voice” in this post. The article’s author skewers this very post with delight, and mistakenly calls this a grammar blog. At this point I think you faithful readers fully understand this is a blog dedicated to helping writers elevate their story craft, not to offer a grammar lesson. My blog discusses prose in service to the story and characters, about passive vs.
Is Your Novel too Wordy? 7 Ways to Tell
We hear this term batted about a bunch, don’t we. Especially in writers’ groups, in how-to books, classes, etc., being too wordy is often an easy place to begin picking apart an aspiring writer’s work. But what does wordiness actually mean? Whether you write in the spare style of Hemingway, the perfect pentameter of a Maclean, or the meandering manner of a John Nichols, the point is to get the most bang for your literary buck, no? Once upon a time, writers were paid by the word.

Review & #Giveaway - I Just Came Here to Dance by Susan Mary Malone @susanmarymalone #LitFic #amreading #LoneStarLit @KristineTHall
Paula Anne Fairbanks understands all about the unexamined life. And she likes hers that way—until her world gets ripped smooth apart. Running from reality, Paula falls under the mythological yarns being spun on Diana Maclean’s porch. Surely Paula’s own choices aren’t to blame for the summer of insanity she spends under the spells of Diana…who is, after all, known as the White Witch of Sociable, Texas.
This Is Why It is Critical For Writers To Take A Break
We all need breaks from writing. But odd advice, no? When the prescription is usually write, write, write. Read, read, study, learn. Write, write, write. And those are my prescriptions too. Nothing is more important than the above, no? But once you’ve finally finished that novel or book-length non-fiction, and hopefully have sent it off to that developmental editor, taking a break from writing follows directly next. And it’s imperative to the process. Working with a true editor takes time.
How To Structure An Amazing Pitch For A Writers Conference
How to Structure an Amazing Pitch for a Writer’s Conference You know how writers’ conferences are. Fast, furious, with lots of breakout sessions and hopefully, one-on-one meetings with agents and editors. I’ll be giving the opening speech at the NETWO 2016 Annual Spring Writers’ Roundup, and will be hearing lots of manuscript pitches, as will all of the presenters involved.
Creating Your Birth Plan
Why write a birth plan? So, you’re starting a family. What could be more important than welcoming your new baby into this world? Traditionally women have given birth in a variety of settings, some women are pleased with their experience while others unfortunately are left wishing things had gone differently. More women today are educating themselves about their birth options. They want the opportunity to have their own “perfect” experience for bringing baby into this world.
Journey to 100%
A few years ago, I began looking into options for professional services and support for families, especially women who had experienced a pregnancy or infant loss. I was in school working on my bachelor's degree with plans to one day manage a small health care facility, I had never heard of the term doula until accidentally stumbling upon a website, Stillbirthday and immediately knew that my life was about to change.
