Credit: John Assad and David Corey In the intricate machinery of the inner ear, hearing begins with a protein that moves a few billionths of a meter up to 100,000 times per second. That protein, called TMC1, sits at the tips of sensory hair cells deep in the snail-shaped cochlea.

A company that provides transport to special schools has been criticised by a mum for causing ‘unnecessary upset’ to her autistic son and other children with additional needs. The mum, of Stowmarket, who does not wish to be named, said changes to his bus route, without warning, have left him feeling so anxious that he does not want to go to school. She is now having to drive him to and from The Priory School in Bury St Edmunds every day, as well as driving to work elsewhere in Suffolk.

A town’s MP has discussed access to affordable dental care at Government level after a practice on a large estate announced its privatisation. Last month, Saxon Dental Practice, in Bury St Edmunds, told customers they would need to pay a monthly fee if they want to remain on its books, after March 31. A monthly fee will also apply for children using the practice on the Moreton Hall estate. Dr Peter Prinsley was elected to represent Bury St Edmunds and Stowmarket, as MP, in July.
