A camera trap in Uttarakhand’s remote Sunderdhunga glacier valley captured a Bengal tiger at 3,015 metres above sea level. The sighting, one of the highest ever recorded, illustrates the predator’s changing range. The tiger is the apex predator of tropical and subtropical regions, including humid mangroves, but in the last decade there have been recorded sightings in frigid high-altitude areas1.

Rita grew up in a small village in Uttarakhand with mountains forming the backbone of her childhood.
