Syriacus Buguzi is a trained medical doctor who turned to journalism. He holds a Masters in ScienceCommunication from The University of Sheffield in the United Kingdom. He graduated from Muhimbili University of Health and Allied Sciences (Muhas) in 2013, where he earned a medical degree but he went on to pursue a career in journalism. This was after he realized that there was a communication gap between medical scientists and journalists in Tanzania.

Researchers say their findings suggest that eliminating Wuchereria bancrofti, the parasitic worm responsible for lymphatic filariasis, commonly known as elephantiasis, could also reduce vulnerability to HIV.

2014 - Specialised Journalism

The David Astor Journalism Awards Trust (DAJAT) is a London-based human rights charity that works to promote, strengthen and support independent journalism in Africa. It is named in honour of the late distinguished editor of The Observer newspaper in London for 27 years, from 1948 to 1975, who was a lifelong champion of African development, human rights and other social justice causes. Established in 2006, the Trust ran an innovative programme for African journalists focusing on professional development and long-term career support. The programme operated in Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda. We searched for and invested in exceptionally promising early-career print journalists working in English with the greatest potential and commitment to excel in the profession. We also built a self-sustaining, regional peer-support network of these next-generation media leaders, working to promote good governance, defend human rights, and further socio-political development.
