1. Introduction The development of artificial intelligence (AI) applications and systems is a process of design, understood as ‘the conception and planning of the artificial’ (Buchanan 1992). As outcomes of design processes, such applications and systems can be denominated ‘AI artifacts’ and constitute design innovations. Defuturing design philosophy (Fry 2020) discusses design innovation as an agent of both creation and destruction, bringing about risks of loss of agency and alienation.
