Tam Hussein is Associate Editor at New Lines magazine and specialist producer with ITV News. He is an award-winning investigative journalist and writer who has reported on jihadist networks, foreign fighters, refugees, trafficking and criminal networks.

Rukneddine, a municipality of Damascus, is not unused to gunfire. Two nights earlier, two men died in a gunfight, and the neighborhood, with its favela-like homes climbing the slopes of Mount Qasioun, the mountain that overlooks Damascus, is known for hosting criminal elements hiding from the law.

A few nights ago, demonstrators gathered in Mezzeh 86 and Barzeh, only a short distance from my home in Damascus. They came demanding action against shabiha gangs, Assad regime paramilitaries, said to still be operating in the area. Recently, human remains have been discovered in Douma and in mass graves at Tishreen Military Hospital, adding to public demands for accountability.
