The power of a name: “air fried,” “boneless wings,” “dual language”

My hot take for today? Boneless wings are just chicken nuggets. Air fryers don’t fry food, they bake it. And, more topically, “dual language” is just good ol’ bilingual education. I laugh about the first two, but that last rebrand makes me pause. Saying “dual language” feels like joining in on the rejection of “bilingual education” in the first place.

'My grandmother never talked to me again'

Happy New Year! I hope you enjoyed time with friends and family to close out 2025 and are looking optimistically toward all that 2026 might bring. As schools reopen following their holiday breaks and the children and grandchildren of immigrants return to mostly English environments, I wanted to write about the conflict that too often exists between the languages of school and home.
