I served as the White House correspondent for the BBC, traveling around the world with Biden and Trump. Currently, I’m an editor at Radio Free Asia and a contributor to the New York Times Book Review. I was a fellow at Princeton University , and I’m now a Yale lecturer. My writing about the CIA has received a Guggenheim, and I’m the author of an acclaimed book, Monstering, about the torture of prisoners at Abu Ghraib (Basic Books).

The administration has withheld billions in research funding and other grants to force the institutions to close down diversity programs, limit international student enrollment, and change admissions policies. The administration has also reduced funding and staff for the US Department of Education, with an eye toward completely dismantling it.

In 2021, the University of Florida (UF) ignited a firestorm when it barred three political science professors from testifying as expert witnesses in a voting-rights case against the state. Allowing the testimony, UF argued, would conflict with the university’s role as a public institution. The decision drew widespread criticism, including from freedom of speech advocates, such as the Foundation for Individual Rights in Education.

Obsessed with clicks and likes, they crave virtual acknowledgement. They are the first generation to live under the allure of perpetual digital connectivity, with social media sometimes more real to them than their parents, teachers, and peers.
