Like giant ants, oil-hauling trucks with Iraqi license plates and white, cylindrical fuel tanks bearing a red stripe down the middle rumble along in single file, one after the other. With the U.S.-Iran war having severely restricted shipping through the Strait of Hormuz, nearly 900 miles away, this four-lane road winding by olive groves and apple orchards in Syria’s western countryside has been Iraq’s only route to export oil to the world.

The United States and Iran reached a deal Sunday to halt more than three months of war, but it did little to bring a permanent solution to a conflict that has rattled the global economy and tested the limits of American power. The agreement, a memorandum of understanding, establishes a 60-day ceasefire across the Middle East, reopens the Strait of Hormuz, ends dueling Iranian and American blockades of the waterway, and releases billions in frozen Iranian funds.

While the rest of the Middle East is once again seized by uncertainty and eruptions of tit-for-tat rocket and drone strikes in the U.S.-Iran war, Syrians are experiencing a calm hope. Some are even calling it a “revival.” Water is plentiful, electricity is around the clock. At night, the capital city and surrounding countryside are largely lit up, a far cry from the dark expanse that engulfed greater Damascus a few months ago.
