HIR | New Theatre
If it ain’t woke, fixate. A red curtain recedes and reveals a rubbish tip of a room, clothes strewn on the floor, dirty dishes piled in the adjacent kitchen, a cross dressing clown sat on a recliner in New Theatre’s production of Taylor Mac’s HIR, a gorgeously grotesque and merrily misanthropic romp. The transvestite face painted man is stroke stricken Arnold, forced to wear clown make-up, a dress and diaper, relegated to repose in a cardboard box, a revenge for years of domestic violence.
Morgan Jenness: A Consideration
For a further gathering of reflections on Jenness’s life and legacy, go here. Most of us who loved Morgan Jenness have heard her inciting incident. I love to hear how others have heard it, and I loved to hear her tell it, slightly differently, depending on the audience.
Hir | The American magazine
A clown bedecked in a pink pig-tailed wig, slapdash greasepaint and oversized, garishly puce jumpsuit, sits with an unsettlingly creepy patience, staring contemplatively into the distance of the intimately sized crowd in the Park 200, where Taylor Mac’s fast-paced story of domestic conflict, set in the middle of nowhere, America, plays out for the subsequent two hours.
Taylor Mac back in Bay Area to capture centuries of queer history in song Original
There’s an old chant from protests and Pride marches: “We’re here, we’re queer, get used to it.” Taylor Mac’s new show “Bark of Millions,” coming to UC Berkeley’s Zellerbach Hall courtesy of Cal Performances, illustrates that LGBTQ+ people have always been here and always will. “It’s reverse conversion therapy,” Mac says.

Bark of Millions | Taylor Mac
Who could have envisioned 50 years ago when the Opera House opened amid cries that Australians will never go see performing art, that one of the anchor performances of the golden anniversary would be an unashamed celebration of queer music. Yes, parts of our culture have moved on impressively, although not all – as recent referendums might reflect.

STORIES TOLD through actors’ fingers. Korean singers performing for you and only you in a room. The epic history of music recounted in two hours by a drag queen. Gravity-defying dancers performing on a stage perpendicular to the ground. Ghost stories, grief stories, Gogol and more. Playwright and artist Taylor Mac on not waiting for permission
What do you think it is about the theater that makes it the best outlet for your creative work? To me theater feels like grassroots activism, and I think we have a moral obligation to try and be present with each other in rooms—however you choose to define the room—and look each other in the eye. In that sense, I just feel like theater is the most ethical art form that there is.
Review: Taylor Mac’s ‘Gary’ Finds Hope and Humor on a Pile of Corpses
Critic’s Pick Image Nathan Lane as the title character in Taylor Mac’s new play, “Gary: A Sequel to Titus Andronicus,” on Broadway. Nothing says Broadway like a luscious red show curtain. But look closer: This one, designed by Santo Loquasto, isn’t merely red. It’s blood red speckled with filth and bedazzled with sparkly rosettes. Welcome to the world of “Gary: A Sequel to Titus Andronicus,” where carnage and camp coexist — if not exactly in peace, then in a constructive dialectic.

The Year in Theater, Part 1
Photo: Evan Michael Woods An Octoroon at Stage West In looking back at the year in Dallas-Fort Worth theater, two intersectional themes stand out: representation for voices from diverse and underrepresented communities, and the growth of women’s voices. Neither is a new discussion, but in 2018 we saw bigger strides than we have before. Unfortunately, it’s a situation of two stage-crosses forward, one stage-cross back. There is still much work to be done.

HIR | Jobsite Theater
HIR sometimes recalls the better works of David Rabe, Sam Shepard and Christopher Durang. But Mr. Mac has his own gloriously skewed vision of the toxins fouling the American family from within, and in its avowedly loopy way HIR reflects current concerns about the decline of the middle class, as well as the trauma war veterans endure. – The New York TimesFrom the Director The title, HIR, (again, pronounced “here”) refers to a genderqueer pronoun.

Content-wise, I didn’t want a plot-plot.
