Nine people were rescued during two ocean emergencies that unfolded just minutes apart Sunday evening off unguarded beaches in Wildwood, according to officials. The Wildwood Beach Patrol's after-hours response team, police officers and firefighters pulled the swimmers to safety after they began struggling in the surf. The rescues happened after lifeguards stationed at the water's edge during the day had gone off duty. “To witnesses, it may have looked like a scripted scramble,” one witness said.
