As a community engagement coordinator for a nonprofit in a heavily immigrant community, 2020 was going to be an important and transitional year. At the time, however, I also had no idea what a crazy and challenging year it would become. Thanks to the COVID-19 pandemic, our plans and our approach had to change overnight.

Public schools across Massachusetts have been closed since the stay-at-home advisory took effect on March 15. Teachers, who often are the ones who can detect child abuse and neglect, now have limited visibility with children. The number of reports of child abuse to the state has thus dropped by 60 percent across the country compared to the same time frame in 2019 according to the Massachusetts Office of the Child Advocate (MOCA).
