Florida law blocking procedures for transgender children thrown out by federal judge
FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. — A federal judge on Tuesday struck down a 2023 Florida law that blocked gender-affirming care for transgender minors and severely restricted such treatment for adults, calling the statute unconstitutional. Senior Judge Robert Hinkle said the state went too far when it barred transgender minors from being prescribed puberty blockers and hormonal treatments with their parents' permission.
Judge to hear arguments on whether to dismiss Trump's classified documents prosecution
A federal judge will hear arguments Thursday on whether to dismiss the classified documents prosecution of Donald Trump, with his attorneys asserting that the former president was entitled to keep the sensitive records with him when he left the White House and headed to Florida. The dispute centers on the Trump team's interpretation of the Presidential Records Act, which they say gave him the authority to designate the documents as personal and maintain possession of them after his presidency.
Trump's a loser, Biden tells campaign crowd in Florida
Donald Trump's private jet, emblazoned with his last name in bold white letters, was parked nearby when Air Force One landed in Florida, where President Joe Biden labelled his predecessor and potential opponent in this year's campaign as a "loser" while raising money for his re-election. It was a typical jab from Biden, but it came with extra punch on Trump's home turf on Tuesday.
Florida deputy’s legal team says he didn’t have an obligation to stop Parkland school shooter
FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. (AP) — A former Florida sheriff’s deputy is claiming he had no legal duty to confront the gunman who murdered 17 people and wounded 17 others at Parkland’s Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School nearly six years ago, his attorney argued Monday. The legal team representing Broward County Deputy Scot Peterson asked a judge to dismiss the lawsuit brought by the victims’ families and survivors, even though the decision would likely be derided by the public.
Tiger Woods lawyers try to stop ex-girlfriend's lawsuit
Lawyers for golf superstar Tiger Woods are expected to argue during a court hearing his ex-girlfriend's lawsuit against him should be halted because she signed a non-disclosure agreement requiring any disagreements between them be settled in private by an arbitrator. Erica Herman, 39, is suing Woods to get out of the agreement, saying she was the victim of his sexual harassment.

TERRY SPENCER, Associated Press Oct. 9, 2022Updated: Oct. 9, 2022 5:59 a.m. FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. (AP) — It's possible Florida school shooter Nikolas Cruz talked himself into a death sentence. Prosecutors played video last week at Cruz's penalty trial of jailhouse interviews he did this year with two of their mental health experts. In frank and sometimes graphic detail, he answered their questions about his massacre of 17 people at Parkland's Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School on Feb.
Dried blood and roses: Jury gets rare look at Parkland scene
FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. (AP) — Roses brought to honor love on that Valentine's Day in 2018 lay withered, their dried and cracked petals scattered across classroom floors still smeared with the blood of victims gunned down by a former student more than four years earlier. Bullet holes pocked walls, and shards of glass from windows shattered by gunfire crunched eerily underfoot at Parkland's Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School, where shooter Nikolas Cruz murdered 14 students and three staff members.
Attorneys for the families who lost relatives in last year's collapse of a Florida apartment tower that killed 98 people have reached a $US1.02 billion ($A1.42 billion) settlement. The agreement to end litigation over the Champlain Towers South tragedy awaits approval by Circuit Judge Michael Hanzman, but that should be a formality.
FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. — Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback Dwayne Haskins was legally drunk and had taken drugs before he was fatally struck by a dump truck while walking on a Florida interstate highway last month, an autopsy report released Monday concluded. The Broward County Medical Examiner’s Office said Haskins’ blood alcohol content was 0.20 when he was fatally struck on Interstate 595 near Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport just before dawn on April 9.

A former student has pleaded guilty to murdering 17 people during a rampage at his high school in Parkland, Florida, leaving a jury to decide whether he will be executed for one of America’s deadliest school shootings. Relatives of the victims who sat in the courtroom and watched the hearing via Zoom shook their heads or broke down in tears as Nikolas Cruz entered his pleas and later apologised for his crimes.
Drilling done, US building demolition set
Demolition specialists have begun laying explosives as they prepare to bring down the precarious but still-standing portion of a collapsed South Florida apartment building. The work has suspended the search mission, but officials said it should eventually open up new areas for rescue teams to explore. The decision to demolish the Surfside building came after concerns mounted the damaged structure was at risk of falling, endangering the crews below and preventing them from operating in some areas.
