ELECTION DAY: A new president will be elected − but it may take some time to determine who wins
For more than 100 years, media of many kinds tried to be the first to report presidential election results. Although that urge still exists, pundits and analysts are now more concerned with accuracy than speed. That’s because of the 2020 election. A raging pandemic, a divided country, a close race, polling failures, false presidential claims of voter fraud and uncertainty made everyone anxious. Then came the Jan.
John Murphy, PhD, on Using Gene Editing to Tackle Primary Hyperoxaluria Type 1
“What we are able to do—we hope, if this product works as intended—is to provide a once in a lifetime treatment that will really allow patients to have normalized oxalate and avoid all the complications of the disease.” Primary hyperoxaluria type 1 (PH1) is a rare genetic disease, caused by a mutation in the AGXT gene, that can cause damage to the kidneys and the formation of kidney stones through the build up of oxalate produced by the liver.

A 'Policy Agenda' Explainer
As the midterms approached, political commentators and wondered how the elections might affect President Biden's agenda. Some media outlets even suggested that in this election, "Biden's agenda hangs in the balance." Now that we stand on the other side of the midterms, much remains to be seen as to how the results will affect Biden's agenda.
Nickel-Catalyzed Enantioselective Synthesis of Pre-Differentiated Homoallylic syn- or anti-1,2-Diols from Aldehydes and Dienol Ethers
In the 1990s, the groups of Tamaru and Mori pioneered the nickel-catalyzed reductive coupling of aldehydes with 1,3-dienes, notably isoprene.(1−5) The benefits of this “isoprenylation,” or in its generalized format homoallylation reaction, include generally mild conditions and high levels of diastereoselectivity (Scheme 1A).
Gig Economy Security Concerns
COVID-19 has fundamentally changed traditional labor models and employment conditions. Many 9-5 office workers, having proved they can be just as productive working from home, expect flexible arrangements to continue post-pandemic, including the option to work from anywhere. And, at a time when all organizations are carefully managing human capital expenses, the demand for gig workers to fill resource gaps grew at an exponential rate.

Computational Study on the Boundary Between the Concerted and Stepwise Mechanism of Bimolecular SNAr Reactions
Introduction Nucleophilic substitutions on aromatic systems can proceed via several different reaction mechanisms.(1) Of these, the most fundamental is the bimolecular nucleophilic aromatic substitution (SNAr) as described in the landmark review by Bunnett et al.(2) As detailed more recently,(3) the widely accepted stepwise energy profile of the SNAr reaction appears not to be the only possible route.
The Warped Ethics of Voting for the Lesser Evil
Centrist Democrats and even some prominent, erstwhile, progressives are using the infamous “lesser evil” argument against the “Never Biden” advocates on the left. Essentially the argument runs something like this: “not voting for Biden is equivalent to voting for Trump”. The reasoning is relatively uncomplicated: “If you do not vote for Biden that is one less vote Trump needs in order to win.

Gaeilge: by Caoimhín de Barra
Radical means rooted. For those bent on reviving the ancient language of Ireland, the aim of restoring Irish (aka Gaelic to many abroad, Gaeilge in its native form) proves as daunting as earlier, daring actions which took on past empires, urged on by rebels and idealists. Although for nearly a century most of Ireland has claimed political independence, its fortunes remain linked to Britain, and so does its majority language, English. What, then, becomes of the ancestral tongue, Irish itself?

4 Reasons Malvertisers Are Some of the Most Sophisticated Advertisers in the World
It’s tempting to write off malvertisers as simply an annoyance or unsophisticated criminals, but nothing could be further from the truth. Far from being crude spammers, malvertisers are sophisticated, smart, persuasive, and often more technologically savvy than many of their legitimate advertising counterparts. And they’re extremely dangerous and costly. The last IAB estimate put the cost of malvertising at just over $1 billion.

Letter: Cuomo’s progressive agenda is absurd
Let’s look at the absurdity of Andrew Cuomo’s Democratic Party’s progressive agenda this year. They desire to increase taxes for the wealthy and yet moan and complain that the wealthy can’t write off their SALT deductions (above $10,000 is no longer deductible). Secondly, they want to promote the hemp industry, considered a gateway drug to more lethal drugs such as heroin. Yet the opioid epidemic is alarmingly impacting our state.

Manage Stakeholders or Flounder!
Managing stakeholders is not as much a priority as it should be and is one of the key reasons projects fail! At least that is my opinion, and with some good reason, may I say! I work a lot with global companies - many of whom have a matrix type structure, where there are lots of dotted line responsibilities! - and in the course of my work with them I frequently ask, when discussing a project or initiative, so "who are the stakeholders and how are you managing them?" Now, some are very good at...
Combating fraud and poor quality must be on the front burner at Advertising Week
When advertising leaders gather in New York City for Advertising Week later this month, the one issue topping every publisher and brand priority list must be the need for a transparent conversation about the technology challenges threatening the long-term health of their advertising businesses. The need for this conversation has never been more apparent.
How cloud and analytics are helping drive digital transformation
How cloud and analytics are helping drive digital transformation Many organizations today have digital transformation at the center of their corporate strategy. At the heart of this transformation is the ability to develop actionable insights. Why publishers need to protect their reputations in the age of server-to-server - Digiday
Most publishers are well aware of the benefits that can come from implementing header bidding and server-to-server containers. But what they might not know is that these increasingly popular monetization tools have ushered in a new threat to inventory quality. By flooding DSPs with duplicate bid requests, header bidding has made it harder for buying platforms to identify when bad actors have disguised a low-quality impression as one that belongs to a premium publisher.
Are They Goals or Useless Thoughts
Recently I was approached by a friend of a client (let's call him Jeff!) who was "interested in maybe getting a bit of coaching" and he wanted to chat to me first before he made any decision, which was fine by me. Jeff's opening question to me was: "will you tell me lots of things that I have not heard before?" My response somewhat took him by surprise when I said that I thought that is unlikely.
Lessons From The Vineyards
I spent the last few days visiting some vineyards and chateaux in the Bourdeaux region with a friend of mine who is a wine distributor in Ireland. Truthfully, I was along just for the pure fun and enjoyment, while my friend was working - tough I know! However, I was reminded of some valuable lessons for my own business amidst all the fun and enjoyment.
Studies on the Enantioselective Iminium Ion Trapping of Radicals Triggered by an Electron-Relay Mechanism
A combination of electrochemical, spectroscopic, computational, and kinetic studies has been used to elucidate the key mechanistic aspects of the previously reported enantioselective iminium ion trapping of photochemically generated carbon-centered radicals.
Contra-thermodynamic Hydrogen Atom Abstraction in the Selective C-H Functionalization of Trialkylamine N-CH3 Groups
We report a simple one-pot protocol that affords functionalization of N-CH groups in N-methyl-N,N-dialkylamines with high selectivity over N-CH R or N-CHR groups. The radical cation DABCO+•, prepared in situ by oxidation of DABCO with a triarylaminium salt, effects highly selective and contra-thermodynamic C–H abstraction from N-CH groups. The intermediates that result react in situ with organometallic nucleophiles in a single pot, affording novel and highly selective homologation of N-CH groups.
Does It Really Impact Bottom Line?
We hear a lot of talk about employee engagement - but are they just words and does it matter? Does it really impact bottom line? When we talk about it, do we know what we are going to do, or is it just aspirational? Firstly, let's look at some facts that I find quite stunning - and alarming!: When viewed from a team effectiveness perspective, we can see how the team is negatively impacted when 79% are not fully engaged.
Teams Winning Gloriously
As you all know the focus of my business is primarily around creating successful teams. In recent weeks the whole discussion around teams has come to the fore in sport, particularly in Europe. I’m not saying this is new but I do find it interesting how much more focus the importance of team, over the individual, is getting. Look at the success of Leicester City winning the Premiership in England - hailed as the epitome of the whole being greater than the sum of the individual parts.
Big Data and Talent Acquisition: Why data-driven decisions are critical to maintaining a competitive advantage in today’s war for talent
What is “Big Data”? As a talent acquisition leader with nearly 20 years recruiting in various verticals, I’ve heard a myriad of definitions and ways in which my peers use data in their respective programs. I’ve seen and collected an abundance of data myself in specific areas for use in talent acquisition. Ways such as workforce and economic data, quantitative and qualitative research data, funnel and process data, candidate source data, marketing data, and financial data. The list goes on and on.

Social media marketing is similar to traditional marketing in that it requires a goal. Why is your company on those sites? However many reasons you have, your objectives need to align with your metrics.

Tax deal killers: How R&D tax credits can impact transaction value
Merger and acquisition activity in the United States for 2014 was the largest it has been in recent years, reported at $1.58 trillion by Dealogic. Because companies are sitting on large amounts of cash and interest rates are low, most experts expect the deal making to continue through 2015. For Silicon Valley technology companies looking to participate in this M&A boom, the objective is to maximize value. Let’s take a look at how this can be done with research and development tax credits.
