My name is Matt Hartman, and I’m a writer from Durham, North Carolina, whose work has appeared in Jacobin, the Los Angeles Review of Books, the Awl, In These Times, Scalawag, and elsewhere. I mostly write cultural criticism and political commentaries focused on identity, place, and the way capitalist economic structures affect—well, everything. Internal conflict over hiring and retention has plagued UNC-Chapel Hill’s School of Civic Life and Leadership since it was launched in 2024, and turnover has continued this summer. Theologian and civil discourse scholar John Rose was among the first faculty members Dean Jed Atkins hired in 2024, but he will join Johns Hopkins University’s School of Government and Policy this fall. “We’re thrilled to welcome John Rose as a senior fellow,” said the school’s dean, William Howell.

Three hours before the university’s main commencement ceremony kicked off in Kenan Stadium, Hudson, the girlfriend of UNC-CH football head coach Bill Belichick, wrote an email to the university’s vice chancellor for communications and marketing, Dean Stoyer. “Happy BANniversary!” it began.

In 1992, The New York Times profiled literature scholar Stanley Fish, who was in the midst of building Duke University’s English department into a world-renowned hub of avante garde academic trends. To speak for Duke’s old guard, the paper turned to Victor Strandberg, who had been teaching in the department for 25 years. Fish and the superstars he recruited would leave Duke within the decade, but Strandberg just taught his last class at Duke this month after 60 years on its faculty.
