Ethics discussion can't find time

Postponed repeatedly since April has been a discussion about adopting a business interest disclosure policy and establishing an ethics committee that Islamorada Village Councilman David Webb wants in place, and soon too, to promote transparency and trust in village government. Elected state and local public officers are required to file campaign finance reports and adhere to rules established by the Florida Commission on Ethics.

Debris entanglement poses risk to Key deer

Add pipe couplings to the list of threats facing endangered Key deer since another member of the native herd has been discovered with a cuffed limb. "The buck has had a section of PVC on his front right foot since at least April 3. His lower leg is getting swollen and according to residents his limp is worsening," said Valerie Preziosi, president of advocacy group Save Our Key Deer. "He's not only in pain, but he's at risk for permanent damage or worse.

History center's interns bring collections online

A summer internship program hosted by the Florida Keys History and Discovery Foundation to catalog and digitize local artifacts is well underway. The varied collection housed at the Jerry Wilkinson Research Library in Islamorada will soon be offered online through the museum's website. There are 14 students working in two classes for four weeks each at the center to document historic postcards, paintings, artifacts, photographs, ordnance, books, periodicals, bones, shards and more.
