Have you ever used a typewriter?

OMG, yes. My mother, bless her heart, insisted I take typing in high school -- and am I ever glad!

How is social media changing news?

Greatly changing it, and not always for the better. If used correctly, it is a tremendous tool for helping businesses spread their news.

Who's your favorite fictional journalist?

Historical fiction: Ken Follett's trilogies are astounding!

Who do you wish followed you?

serious journalists and journalism outlets. Because I chase travel stories as a real journalist.

Why did you become a journalist?

My high school teacher insisted it was right. I resisted - until I took a news writing class as a college elective. A challenge I ate up!

Did you work for your high school newspaper? If so, what did you do there?

I FOUNDED a school newspaper in junior high school! then become editor of my high school paper, too, winning a national writing award!

What story are you most proud of writing or working on?

I was part of the Pulitzer Prize-winningnews team at the San Jose Mercury News in 1989 covering the aftermath of the Loma Prieta Earthquake.

When you're not at a computer, where are you most likely to be?

on a trail running or hiking, in the garden, or reading.

Aside from your own, what's your favorite publication to read?

New Yorker, New York Times...
