My published articles include news stories, reviews, interviews, features, and profiles related to film, books, music, the visual arts, and pop culture, most all of which have appeared either in newspapers or magazines; a handful of my pieces have also appeared in literary journals, trade journals, festival programs and the alternative press.

There are constants in the work of Victor Sjöström, a major figure in film history both behind and in front of the camera. One is the seeming always present sense of death. Sometimes, death might come in the form of disease or a sudden, violent mishap; or sometimes, a character in a film might depict death, or in the case of The Phantom Carriage, death’s servant. At the conclusion of most all his films, viewers are confronted by tragedy, some form of resignation, or noble self-sacrifice.

The Troubled History of Silent Film Pandora’s Box

Pandora's Box Eureka Entertainment Rob Hardy’s 2002 thriller Pandora’s Box has a troubled history. The film has stirred controversies, censorship, and critical disdain, and the original negative was lost. Hardy’s film only approximates the 1929 film G.W. Pabst made in Germany during the silent era, which remains a powerful piece of early cinema. Eureka Entertainment recently released Pabst’s Pandora’s Box on Blu-ray as part of its Masters of Cinema series.

As a kid, who didn't collect baseball or football cards, or cards depicting their favorite characters from Star Trek or Buffy the Vampire Slayer? [Read the previous installment of this piece HERE.] Although the Booksmith had strong sections devoted to science fiction, poetry and pop culture - and hosted many authors in those areas, fiction was the store's bread and butter. In fact, fiction represents the single category for which there are the most author cards.
