Can Seattle Still Be the Creative Hub It Wants to Be?
We love to think of ourselves as a creative city—home of Jimi Hendrix, Quincy Jones, and the “Seattle Sound” that came to be known as Grunge. This is a place where people used to get genuinely excited about a Tom Skerritt sighting. Not to mention all of the theater, visual arts, and poetry that we claim to appreciate, even if some of that appreciation is theoretical.
The Boeing Bust Wasn't Just a One Time Thing
In 1971, a now-iconic billboard was placed on the edge of town that read: “Will the last person leaving SEATTLE — Turn out the lights.” The Supersonic Transport (SST) project had just been canceled by the federal government. Thousands of Boeing workers were laid off. The aerospace boom went bust, and Seattle fell into one of its cyclical spirals of hand-wringing and reinvention. That history constitutes one of the main timelines in my novel Supersonic.
The Fight to Keep Seattle Schools Open Isn’t New
Last year, Seattle Public Schools (SPS) ham-fistedly announced plans to shut down up to 21 schools—only to later reduce that number to four and then table the proposal altogether. For now, at least. After that emotional roller coaster for parents and students, the only thing that’s actually closing is the current SPS superintendent’s career. He announced his upcoming departure just a month after accepting a contract extension through 2027.

SUPERSONIC | Kirkus Reviews
A family saga whose execution doesn’t quite match its ambition. Three generations of Seattle women navigate bigotry, politics, and scheming men. Kohnstamm’s second novel opens with a setup that at first seems too thin to carry even a short story: In 2014, Sami Hasegawa-Stalworth has volunteered to run her children’s elementary school PTA in hopes of renaming the school after her grandmother, Masako Hasegawa, a victim of Japanese American internment and a longtime music teacher there.

The tech industry’s need for sustainable and reliable energy sources has never been more pressing. “As power-intensive generative AI training and inference continues to grow faster than other uses and applications, global data center electricity consumption could roughly double” by 2030, according to a new study from Deloitte.
AI Takes the Wheel in Highway Repairs: New Tech Flags Deteriorating U.S. Roads for DOTs
One day a decade ago, when Mark Pittman was a student at The University of Utah in Salt Lake City, he got caught in a snarl of traffic caused by a broken traffic light. The line was barely budging, and he was growing irritated. He knew he would be late for his class. But then a different kind of light sparked in his mind, illuminating a path from frustration to opportunity.
Street Smarts: Bentley’s Partnership With Google - And Its Acquisition Of Cesium - Chart A New Era For How We Design, Build And Operate Our Infrastructure | Bentley Blog | Infrastructure Engineering Software & Solutions
In March 2024, a huge container ship lost power as it navigated out of Baltimore Harbor. The 100,000-ton vessel veered off course and crashed into the Francis Scott Key Bridge. The collision claimed the lives of six construction workers who were performing maintenance on the bridge. It also shut down port operations and severed a vital traffic artery.

How The Microsoft Garage is hacking creative culture on a global scale How The Microsoft Garage is hacking creative culture on a global scale By Thomas Kohnstamm When Microsoft selected Satya Nadella as its third CEO in 2014, he took charge of a 40-year-old company in an industry that thrives on innovation and fresh ideas.
How Microsoft designed a campus with the evolution of work in mind
It goes without saying that the pandemic has upended work life in 2020. But rather than seeing this period of compulsory remote work as a one-off byproduct of COVID-19, it can be understood as an inflection point in a long-coming technology-driven reckoning on the nature of office work. Will employees be looking for more ways to connect in person after the pandemic? How about in a decade or 20 years, for that matter?
LAKE CITY by Thomas Kohnstamm Read by Bronson Pinchot
Narrator Bronson Pinchot's warm voice delivers a post-9/11 story that tackles culture clash and class struggle. After the breakup of his marriage, Lane Bueche leaves New York City and finds himself back in his mother's apartment in a bleak neighborhood in Seattle. Desperate for a quick buck that will allow him to reclaim his urban life, he helps a foster parent fight a child custody battle. Ever indecisive, he becomes entangled with the drama.
Station B: A platform that could help boost production of lifesaving biological therapies
CAMBRIDGE, United Kingdom – In recent years, companies have figured out how to engineer bacteria to make cement, helping reduce the pollution involved in traditional manufacturing. Using more advanced techniques, scientists have even programmed patients’ immune cells to recognize and kill leukemia cells, giving children who had virtually no chance of survival years of prolonged life.
Lake City, where Seattle’s gritty side lives on
Back then in the 1980s, that was still considered progress for Lake City: as a receptacle for the crap that the rest of Seattle didn’t want but couldn’t quite bring itself to throw away. It was the last time for decades that I got my hopes up for the neighborhood of my birth. On first glance, Lake City Way today can look like little more than a strip of downtrodden and often sleazy businesses adrift in a sea of cracked parking lots and brambles. But it is what it is for reasons rooted in history.
Is Thomas Kohnstamm’s Lake City the Novel Seattle Needs Right Now?
Author Thomas Kohnstamm. What does it mean to live in a city that has the two richest men on earth, a median income of $80,000, and a homelessness problem among the worst in the country? Thomas Kohnstamm’s first novel, Lake City, arrived earlier this week, and while Kohnstamm set the story in December 2001, this question vibrates at its center. Kohnstamm lays down the dichotomy on the book’s first page: “To be fair, this is not the Seattle of Microsoft, Starbucks and Amazon.
Opinion | To Amazon’s new host cities: Be ready for a lot of change
As New York City and Crystal City in Virginia prepare for Amazon to plant its new headquarters and thousands of employees in their areas, take it from a rare Seattle townie who’s lived in the same house he grew up in since the 1970s: Get ready for a lot of change — some for the better, but certainly not all of it positive. I have never found Seattle at once so cosmopolitan and so painfully one-dimensional.
