Your Turn: How to stop a thief from spoiling a college semester abroad
I took it seriously when my grandson asked me for some tips to help keep him safe when he travels to Italy for a semester abroad. As someone raised in New York City, the son of an NYPD detective and a former New York State senior investigator, I had helpful knowledge and experience to share, but it was not enough. To better help my grandson, I took a deep dive into risks associated with travel, especially for young people. What I discovered is that technology is a double-edged sword for travelers.

Your Turn: Swimming at your own risk may be hazardous to your health
Your Turn: Swimming at your own risk may be hazardous to your health Author Tom Cassidy as a lifeguard at Rockaway Beach. The American Red Cross has three lifesaving principles, “Reach, Throw, Don’t Go.” Stand or lie down on solid ground and reach out with an object like a pole that the drowning person can grab so you can pull them to safety. Throw a flotation device toward a swimmer in distress to help them stay afloat and call for help.
Your Turn: Hospitals need a ‘shot in the arm’
Your Turn: Hospitals need a ‘shot in the arm’ METRO photo Thomas M. Cassidy As a former senior investigator for the New York State Attorney General’s Office who spent twenty years investigating health fraud, I was truly annoyed when I discovered how hospitals are paid, and not paid, by insurers and individuals. Keep in mind that hospitals are required by federal law to provide emergency care and stabilize all patients regardless of a patient’s ability to pay.
Another Voice: America's hospitals in need of a shot in the arm
As a former senior investigator for the state attorney general’s office who spent 20 years investigating health fraud, I was annoyed to discover how hospitals are paid − and not paid − by insurers and individuals. By law, hospitals must provide emergency care and stabilize all patients regardless of a patient’s ability to pay. As a result, hospitals provide over $40 billion a year in unpaid care.

Home Arts & Entertainment Your Turn: Keep Social Security intact for millennials, Gen Z and future... By Thomas M. Cassidy According to a new CNBC poll, Social Security is a top issue for most American voters, so let’s strengthen this vital program rather than water it down. Social Security has provided essential economic support for Americans for almost 100 years.
Another Voice: Keep Social Security strong for millennials and Gen Z
Social Security has provided essential economic support for Americans for almost 100 years. The program, which provides workers with inflation-protected retirement, disability and survivorship benefits, is a model for the world: Its principal features have been adopted by more than 170 countries. So let’s not water it down for future generations of American workers. Social Security is not a welfare program; it’s paid for by workers. For 2024, workers are taxed 12.4% on their income up to $168,600.

Home Arts & Entertainment Your Turn: Artificial Intelligence (AI) needs Natural Intelligence (NI) By Thomas M. Cassidy Artificial Intelligence (AI) will cost many people their jobs. But some occupations desperately needed by a rapidly aging population cannot be replaced by computers or machines. For example, nurse assistants in hospitals and nursing homes. Research conducted by Goldman Sachs estimates that 25% of current work tasks could be automated by Artificial Intelligence (AI).
Commentary: A simple, common-sense solution to health care reform
The United States has reported more cases of the COVID-19 virus than any other country. With more than seven million confirmed infections and over 235,000 deaths, this pandemic would be even worse without the help of many uninsured essential workers with low-paying jobs who put their lives at risk to keep us fed and safe.

Perspective: Caring for America’s Heroes
By Thomas Cassidy New York State government should not cut funding for America’s heroes residing at the Long Island State Veterans Home at Stony Brook University. The veterans home has, and does, provide first-class health services for veterans and their spouses who receive rehabilitation and long-term care in their time of need.

Hospital-only plan makes health care more affordable
America's hospitals, doctors, nurses and health professionals are the finest in the world, but the sky-high costs we pay for health insurance puts millions of Americans in medical and financial peril. And sadly, piecemeal attempts to overhaul the complex and muddled health insurance system in the United States have created more problems than they have solved. The National Center for Health Statistics estimates that 13 percent of American adults younger than 65 are uninsured.
Keep on securing the future
Social Security is an investment made by American workers that provides individuals and their families with survivorship, disability and retirement benefits. The more you pay in, the higher your benefit. Social Security is easy-to-understand, effective and efficient, yet it is being grouped together with dysfunctional government programs like Medicare as a problematic issue in the emerging 2016 presidential campaign.
