Thomas Sixt’s Biography

Thomas Sixt is a German chef, food photographer, and author known for connecting professional culinary craft with visual storytelling. He combines more than thirty years of kitchen experience from Michelin-starred restaurants with a distinctive artistic vision that explores food as culture, emotion, and art.
Trained under renowned chef Alfons Schuhbeck, Sixt worked for seven years in fine-dining restaurants before founding his own cooking school in Vienna. Over the years, he has taught more than 10,000 participants in hands-on cooking classes and shared his expertise across television, print, and digital media. His approach blends classical technique with a modern philosophy: cooking as mindfulness, patience, and sensory awareness.
On his culinary platform thomassixt.de, Sixt publishes recipes, tutorials, and essays that make cooking accessible and inspiring for home cooks. His extensive online archive includes more than 700 dishes and over 400 instructional videos, all photographed and produced by himself. Each recipe aims to teach technique and intuition rather than mechanical repetition — reflecting his belief that cooking is a creative dialogue between craft and curiosity.
His work has been featured across major media outlets, including Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung, Süddeutsche Zeitung, WELT.de, stern.de, BILD.de, and Men’s Health. Television appearances include RTL’s Punkt 12 and a three-year cooking series on W24-TV in Vienna titled “Headcam Cooking with Thomas Sixt.” He also appeared as a culinary expert at the BAMBI Awards, cooking and moderating behind the scenes for Burda’s media coverage.
Sixt’s background as both chef and photographer has made him a sought-after expert for visual gastronomy and food styling. His photographic work has been profiled by the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung and Computerbild, and his recipes and visual concepts have been published in leading lifestyle magazines such as Freundin.de, Lust auf Genuss, Annemarie Wildeisens Kochen, and Freizeit Revue. His early innovation in digital cooking media led to a feature by Apple iBooks, highlighting his interactive cookbook series for iPad.
Through thomassixt.com, Sixt explores the artistic side of food — creating culinary still life and botanical art editions that merge photography, symbolism, and minimalism. His works are presented as limited fine-art prints and form part of his ongoing project Culinary Symbols, a reflection on the relationship between nature, culture, and nourishment.
Beyond photography, Thomas Sixt continues to write and publish essays and columns that bridge journalism, food philosophy, and mindfulness. His project Achtsam Kochen (“Mindful Cooking”) connects culinary practice with reflection — offering readers a slower, more conscious way of engaging with ingredients and daily life.
His tone is honest and human, marked by the belief that real cooking — like real journalism — begins with presence. As he puts it: “I don’t write for algorithms. I cook, photograph, and write for people.”
