Evaluation of a DNA methylation-based measure of chronic inflammation in two generations of adults in metropolitan Cebu, Philippines
The authors have declared no competing interest. Research reported in this publication was funded by the National Institute on Aging of the National Institutes of Health (R01 AG061006R21) I confirm all relevant ethical guidelines have been followed, and any necessary IRB and/or ethics committee approvals have been obtained.
Doing More With Less: Advancing a Contextualized Understanding of Human Biology With Minimally‐Invasive Approaches to Capillary Blood Sampling
1 Introduction In 2014 I published “Development and validation of assay protocols for use with dried blood spot samples” in the American Journal of Human Biology (McDade 2014). It appeared as part of the AJHB “Toolkit: Methods in Human Biology” series, a newly established mechanism for maintaining a virtual methods handbook that tracks new research directions, and provides up-to-date protocols for important, long-standing methods (Ellison and McDade 2012).
Lower Socioeconomic Status Predicts Increased Proinflammatory Signaling in Late Pregnancy: Evidence From a Filipino Cohort
1 Introduction Socioeconomic status (SES) is a strong predictor of health outcomes across the life course, particularly during early life (Aronoff et al. 2024; Cavigelli and Chaudhry 2012; Chen and Miller 2013; Kuzawa 2020; Ross et al. 2019; Sternthal et al. 2011). Socioeconomic disparities in birth outcomes are well established across high and low-income contexts, but the mechanisms by which maternal SES impacts pregnancy physiology are complex (Braveman et al.
Implementation of a minimally invasive cell culture system to measure the regulation of inflammation in a school‐based sample of adolescents
1 INTRODUCTION Dysregulated inflammation is an important biological pathway through which contexts and experiences can shape health over the life course (Furman et al., 2019; McDade, 2023). Cytokines and acute phase proteins are routinely quantified in peripheral blood samples, but baseline measures provide limited information since they cannot capture how immune cells respond to pro-inflammatory stimuli, and how they downregulate responses following activation.
Association of cumulative loneliness with all-cause mortality among middle-aged and older adults in the United States, 1996 to 2019 | Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences
Association of cumulative loneliness with all-cause mortality among middle-aged and older adults in the United States, 1996 to 2019 Edited by Eileen Crimmins, University of Southern California, Los Angeles, CA; received April 25, 2023; accepted October 26, 2023 Significance Loneliness is a growing public health concern worldwide.
Three common assumptions about inflammation, aging, and health that are probably wrong | Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences
Significance Inflammation is one of the most important, and potent, physiological systems in the human body. It is widely assumed that levels of inflammation increase with age and that chronic inflammation contributes to cardiovascular diseases. This understanding of inflammation is based on studies of people living in affluent, industrialized settings with low burdens of infectious disease.

Association between infectious exposures in infancy and epigenetic age acceleration in young adulthood in metropolitan Cebu, Philippines
2.1.1 DNA methylation and measures of biological aging Genomic DNA from white blood cells was treated with sodium bisulfite (EZ DNA Methylation kit, Zymo Research), and converted DNA was applied to the Infinium Methylation EPIC array following manufacturer's standard conditions (Illumina Inc., San Diego, CA, USA). Samples were randomized by baseline sampling neighborhood to minimize any batch effects, and quality control was performed to confirm participant sex.

Children’s books for holiday fun
Children’s books for holiday fun By Wendy Guild Swearingen You know how much kids love getting books as gifts. Seriously, though, these selections really will be welcome. They encourage kids to think, dream, and do. Anything that gets kids’ eyeballs off their screens is OK in my book.
Adiposity and Chronic Inflammation in Young Women Predict Inflammation during Normal Pregnancy in the Philippines
Background: Rates of overweight and obesity are on the rise globally, and excess adipose tissue may contribute to elevations in inflammation during pregnancy, leading to pregnancy complications and adverse birth outcomes. Objective: The purpose of this study was to evaluate adiposity and inflammation in young women as predictors of inflammation in the third trimester of pregnancy in a community-based sample of healthy women.
Longitudinal evidence that fatherhood decreases testosterone in human males | Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences
Skip to main content Longitudinal evidence that fatherhood decreases testosterone in human males Edited by A. E. Storey, Department of Psychology, Memorial University of Newfoundland, St. John's, NF, Canada, and accepted by the Editorial Board July 28, 2011 (received for review May 10, 2011) Abstract In species in which males care for young, testosterone (T) is often high during mating periods but then declines to allow for caregiving of resulting offspring.
