What was your first job as a journalist?

As a news and business general assignment reporter for a metro Atlanta weekly, making $165 a week.

Have you ever used a typewriter?

Yes, many times. I started out using a manual typewriter, and then an IBM Selectric. I have a cast-iron, 1910 typewriter in my office.

How is social media changing news?

We're living in a real time environment, in which everyone thinks they can be a journalist. This is not necessarily for the better.

Who's your favorite fictional journalist?

Lou Grant

What does it mean to be a journalist?

It means being in a position to inform the public of the issues and trends they need to be aware of, in our modern society.

What's the funniest news-related #hashtag you've seen?

None that I can remember.

How do you prefer to be pitched on stories?

No preference

What tools and software do you use to do your job?

Mac, Mac applications.

What's your favorite social network?

Facebook and Twitter.

Who do you wish followed you?

All major news networks. I'm an extremely insightful political journalist.

Why did you become a journalist?

I found early on that I had a knack and ability when it came to writing.

Did you work for your high school newspaper? If so, what did you do there?

I wrote one article for my high school newspapers, on drugs. It was very well-received.

What story are you most proud of writing or working on?

My profile of former Atlanta Symphony conductor Yoel Levi, who I worked with when he was earning his black belt in American karate.

What advice can you offer to aspiring journalists?

Be true and fair to every side of an issue and to everyone whom you interview. Don't have an agenda.
