June’s full moon comes with sweet name & rare view for GA. Here’s why

Georgia skywatchers are in for a treat this month as the Strawberry Moon makes its annual appearance. According to Time and Date, this year, the full moon reaches its peak brightness at 3:44 a.m. EDT on June 11, but the best viewing begins at moonrise on Tuesday, June 10, when it will rise low in the southeastern sky, casting a warm amber glow. Despite the name, the Strawberry Moon won’t appear pink or red.

Hurricane Katrina through the lens of a Gulf Coast photographer

In 1985, Hurricane Elena was heading toward the Mississippi Gulf Coast. I was young and a bit too gung ho about covering the storm. I wanted to be at Ground Zero when the storm hit. It was then that Vernon Matthews said, “It’s my job to keep you alive so you can cover the aftermath.” Twenty years later, Matthews’ words rang true as Hurricane Katrina was churning toward the Mississippi Gulf Coast.

Judge from Mississippi civil rights murder trial dies at 79

Retired Hinds County Circuit Judge L. Breland Hilburn, is photographed June 12, 2015, presiding at a trial in Pascagoula, Miss. Hilburn was 79 when he died April 5, 2021, at University of Mississippi Medical Center of complications from COVID-19. Hilburn in 1994 handed down a life sentence to the white supremacist convicted of killing civil rights leader Medgar Evers.
