Why Work With Fintechs: 4 Reasons
Over 92% of German citizens have never heard of the term “Fintech”, according to a survey from explorare. Probably, a result of not having the full exposure and legacy of traditional banking institutions. However, the question here is, whether this inductive example above is just a phenomenon in Germany, or whether this lack of awareness appears deductively on a global scale.

The changing face of general practice
Justin Cumberlege, partner with healthcare law specialist Cripps, explains how general practice is changing and what he has learned whilst working with GP federations If the partners in your practice who trained to practice medicine thought that was the skill required to get them through their working lives it’s becoming self-evident that this is changing, and rapidly.
Investigating indemnity and new models of care
Indemnity remains central to practices maintaining their reputation and protecting themselves from legal challenges.

Are pay conditions for salaried GPs likely to affect motivation?
Are pay conditions for salaried GPs likely to affect motivation? Figures from NHS Digital have revealed that salaried GPs, on average, earned £53,600 during 2014/2015 compared to GP partners earning £101,500 over the same period. The former figure represents a 1.7% decrease on the previous year while the latter represents a 1.7% increase. We asked our readers if pay conditions for salaried GPs were likely to affect motivation This article was featured in a past of Practice Business.
Keeping it in the family
The FDA will be particularly familiar to those working in smaller practices, with the charitable organisation regularly signposting their members to key educational resources in primary care. Their work includes expert-led advice on how practices can prepare to transition from a small or medium business-sized model to a federation and their newsletters continue to feature insightful overviews of NHS policies relating to finance, funding and operational guidance such as the Five Year Forward View.
Premises help desk: What lurks beneath the surface
From noroviruses to mould, GP practices can be a minefield of contagions and even the most rigorous health and safety arrangements can fall prey to what lurks beneath the surface. Legionella and asbestos can exist in the fabric of your surgery and both can silently attack the lungs and threaten the health of patients and staff if not correctly managed. How do you ensure they don’t wreak havoc in your practice?
60 seconds with Robert Varnam
What do you do to de-stress after a long day? I spend a lot of time away from home with big groups of people so de-stressing is very much about family and home. I think a perfect end to a day would include cuddles and a bedtime story with our son and then chatting on the patio with my wife in front of a fire.
Skilling up | Practicebusiness.co.uk
PAs are viewed as a potential solution to workload pressures facing general practice. Their role is similar to that of a GP; they work autonomously but as ‘dependent practitioners’ they remain under the supervision of a named GP. PAs have a first degree in mainly biomedical or health-related sciences and undergo a two-year intensive medical training programme acquiring both the knowledge and skills to enable them to practice medicine.
Home is where the heart is
The RCGP suggests that computerised records should be consulted prior to a home visit being made, with specific attention paid to: ‘Data on consultations spanning the past year; investigation results; medication; details of referrals; major alerts; quality and outcomes framework reminders and even hospital letters.’ This relatively new reliance on technology paints a rather different picture from the traditional perception of GP home visits.
The pursuit of happiness
They say, ‘love what you do’; unfortunately, this is often easier said than done. Work can sometimes become all-consuming and – especially when in the business of caring for others – you can forget to care for yourself. There has been much talk of burnout in general practice but it’s important to consider things in a more positive light.
60 seconds with Gary Hughes
What do you do to de-stress after a long day? I know there’s plenty of stress around general practice so I’m lucky that the need to de-stress is rare and it’s more about switching off, unless I’m choosing not to. My seven-year-old daughter, cookery and football are always good for unwinding – and a good pint or a single malt doesn’t do any harm either. Tell me something unusual or interesting about yourself?
A spoonful of coinfidence
After a government source suggested that the NHS hospital crisis was the fault of GP surgeries not offering much needed patient access, and prime minister Theresa May urging practices to extend opening hours to include seven-day services, have we finally reached a new low point between parliament and primary care? We asked readers for their thoughts on what Downing Street can do to win back the confidence of general practice This article was featured in a past issue of Practice Business.
Service with a smile
Q. £2.4m GP access fund grant, matched by NHS funding, was provided to get the MyHealthcare service off the ground. Tell us a bit more about the original funding arrangements A. The £2.4m funding was from the Prime Minister’s Challenge Fund. In 2014 David Cameron announced that there would be £50m made available for extended access projects which groups of GPs could apply for. At the time Birmingham South Central CCG submitted an application on behalf of a group of GPs, but it was unsuccessful.
Practice makes permanent
Glenn Michibata, a three-time all-American who played professional tennis for 10 years, spent 12 years as head coach of men’s tennis at Princeton.
Leader of the pack
After 22 years of working in primary care it would be understandable if Karin Bruce was beginning to take on fewer managerial responsibilities or, perhaps, even slowing down. Based on current evidence, however, neither of these options are likely to be chosen. Alongside her job as a practice manager – and holding an alliance leadership position – she is also a CQC specialist advisor.
Rapid response primary care: Paramedics in practice
The complexity of care required for patients with multiple long-term conditions, both physical and mental, can make it difficult for one clinician to have the breadth of knowledge, experience or time to provide the level of care required. The solution: practice teams with an increasingly diverse skillset. So, let’s look at paramedics as practitioners and the role they can play in general practice and what they can add to the multidisciplinary mix.
Getting to the root of it
Root Cause Analysis (RCA) is a problem-solving method developed by NASA in the 1950s. It is used to methodically identify the root cause of events rather than simply addressing their results. Initially used to analyse industrial accidents, it has also been adopted for healthcare. So, how can a problem-solving method developed by NASA help practice managers?
Secrets to a successful safeguarding strategy
The issue of safeguarding is often key to the success of GP practices’ CQC inspections. Nicole Ridgwell, solicitor at Ridouts Professional Services PLC, outlines the importance of practice managers staying up-to-date with safeguarding matters and offers some top tips to avoid CQC criticism The Care Act has placed safeguarding on a statutory footing for the first time. Accordingly, the extent to which GP practices comply with safeguarding legislation is high on CQC inspectors’ agendas.
Collaboration with a common purpose
NHS Collaborate is a new approach to multi-disciplinary primary care leadership, initially commissioned by NHS England as a partnership initiative between New NHS Alliance and the National Association of Primary Care (NAPC).
Leadership to be proud of
John doesn’t feel the same about work anymore. Something’s changed. He used to approach it with commitment and drive, happily doing extra hours because he believed in where they were going and what they were doing as an organization. They were in this together. But now things are different. A new management structure has made him voiceless and depressed. Decisions he was once part of are now made behind his back. And the result?
A little something for the wait
In an ideal world the perfect waiting room would be a serene sanctuary for patients, with reading materials resembling a local library accompanied by user-friendly check-in computer systems and quiet conversations part of the standard experience. Alas, opening practice doors on a Monday morning to a high number of demanding patients might put such aspirations into perspective.
Four Essentials for Effective Learning Using Virtual Reality
Juan had successfully passed all the eLearning modules focusing on traffic safety, he’d read the manual, and he’d passed the test certifying his knowledge. Juan was confident he could expertly navigate the busy Mexico City traffic on his delivery motorcycle without incident. His job as a delivery courier required him to be fast, but his employer also wanted him to be safe. Due to the dangerous nature of the job, one or two couriers are seriously injured every year, some of them fatally.
A heavy burden to bear
The cost of the obesity epidemic is expected to reach £50bn per annum by 2050 according to Public Health England which estimates that the direct NHS costs of treating overweight and obesity-related morbidity was £6.3bn in 2015. Key health risks associated with the condition include type 2 diabetes, heart disease and cancer –the treatment of which can consume roughly five per cent of the overall NHS budget.

What do you do to de-stress after a long day? I am an avid horsewoman and am very lucky to live in the heart of eventing country in the Cotswolds and to own my own horses (we currently have two, with a foal due in the spring which we’re all very excited about).
Taking control of diabetes care
The increase in the number of people with long-term conditions is putting added pressure on healthcare resources.
It’s not all tied up
‘It was the best of times, it was the worst of times…’ The opening words of Charles Dickens’ a Tale of Two Cities now ring true for GPs and their practices; pressure is mounting due to severely stretched budgets and increasing demand on services, yet we are seeing more innovation in the sector and the NHS is taking measures to support primary care, as evidenced in the Five Year Forward View (FYFV) and specified in the GP Forward View.
Fee recovery: Legal proceedings for fee recovery
Fees play a large part in enabling independent schools to deliver the quality education students and parents expect. However, what happens when there’s a failure to pay? James Garside, associate at Veale Wasbrough Vizards look at the options available to you and the steps you can take before you resort to…legal proceedings for fee recovery What options are available to bursars where there’s a failure to pay fees?
Do STPs hold the key to the NHS living within its means?
Sustainability Transformation Plans (STPs) are a series of local 'footprints' split by 44 different locations which will review all aspects of NHS spending and determine the future financial, clinical and organisational structures of healthcare in England. We ask: Do STPs hold the key to the NHS living within its means?
System change | Practicebusiness.co.uk
In the search to find an effective system that prioritises patients by need, which ideas are easing demand? Dillion Sykes, director at Productive Primary Care, takes a look at a GP access scheme designed to let clinicians speak with those who require care most urgently What is Doctor First? Doctor First is a GP appointment system that helps GP practices to better manage demand by giving patients rapid contact with a senior clinician.
A state affair | independentleader.co.uk
There’s clear evidence that collaboration between private and state schools continues to thrive. For example, the ISC estimates that thousands of cross-sector partnerships currently involve up to 160,000 state school pupils. Recent examples of private schools sponsoring academies have, however, shown that direct sponsorship of an academy can be fraught with difficulty and requires careful planning. Consider the colourful history of Wellington College, Berkshire and Wellington Academy, Wiltshire.
Planning for tomorrow
According to Understanding pressures in general practice, the 2016 King’s Fund report, more GPs today are retiring – and retiring earlier. A 2015 national survey of GPs by the British Medical Association reported that 34% of GPs intend to retire within the next five years and 17% are considering a change to part-time work. And this is not a phenomenon just reserved for older GPs – younger practitioners are leaving their partnerships too.
GP services in full-scale crisis as eighth surgery set to close
Credit: This story was first seen on the Argus GP services in Brighton and Hove and around the country are in a ‘full-blown crisis’ a pressure group has warned. Sussex Defend the NHS spoke out after it emerged the city is to lose its eighth GP in two years, the Argus reports. Madeleine Dickens, from the group, warned the closure of The Ridgeway Surgery would not be the last as more doctors reach retirement age.
Keeping the data dream alive
Q. Can you tell us about the early life of Brisdoc and your current role at the organisation? A. It was originally an OOH co-operative in the early days of doctors being able to give up doing their own out of hours work. We are talking around 2004, but it’s since diversified into providing some daytime services. It runs several practices and runs units in the two main acute hospitals in Bristol, the Bristol Royal Infirmary and Southmead Hospital.
