It's a deep soul connection: Erasure on how 40 years of friendship got them through grief – and why Vince Clarke has quit touring
Andy Bell is rabbiting away on multiple topics. There's his farm in Mallorca, where he and his husband Stephen Moss have had a fine year harvesting pomegranates, kiwis and lemons. Then there's the Erasure frontman's fascination with clowns (“Would the makeup help you avoid facial recognition technology?”), memories of 90s nightclubbing (“You could do anything and get away with it!”) and a worry that he's turning into “a fussy old grandpa”. Suddenly, he catches himself: “But what about you , Vince?
‘I thank God for killing me and bringing me back’: Nicolas Winding Refn on the emergency op that inspired his new sci-fi horror
Nicolas Winding Refn has his phone out, showing me one of the goriest scenes he’s ever been involved in. Given that the Danish director’s movies have involved hands getting sliced off, eyeballs being gouged out and a son reaching deep inside his mother’s womb, that’s certainly saying something. In this video, the camera is fixed upon a beating heart when suddenly – slash! – it gets sliced open with a knife. We travel into the open chamber, as needles arrive to pierce through the muscle.
Sunday in the Park with George musical cancelled after Ariana Grande and Jonathan Bailey both drop out
First, it was Ariana Grande who dropped out . Then her co-star Jonathan Bailey followed her out the door. Now, the London revival of Sunday in the Park With George has been cancelled altogether , with organisers perhaps anticipating that it would be hard to sell tickets for a star-studded musical without the stars. Grande and Bailey, who appeared together as Glinda and Fiyero in Wicked and Wicked: For Good , had originally been cast as Dot and George in Stephen Sondheim's hit musical.

The pest I’ll never forget: the cockroaches were everywhere – even on our wine glasses Original
I don't know if cockroaches really could, as we're often told, survive a nuclear apocalypse, but I can tell you this with certainty: they can definitely survive pest control. "Hopefully that should be a bit better now," said the friendly exterminator after his first visit to our flat. By the third visit he was speaking more honestly.
‘Will I screw this up?’ How I played timpani for the Philharmonia Orchestra – with no drumming experience
I’m about to perform with the Philharmonia Orchestra and I’ve not rehearsed my part. In fact, I’ve not even seen the score. Or played my instrument before. Nervously taking my place among the virtuosos, I look around: the brass, string and woodwind sections are all warmed up and ready to be led by the energetic conductor, Santtu-Matias Rouvali. Then I glance up at the audience: the Royal Festival Hall is packed to the rafters.

‘I didn’t miss a thing’: How Nick Haymes photographed his sons’ entire lives from verrucas to homemade hamster coffin
Not many family photo albums open with images of the twin towers on fire. But for Nick Haymes, it made perfect sense. “When 9/11 happened,” he says, “I realised life was very short.” At the time, he was living in New York, trying to forge a career, while his friend, colleague and future wife Lina was dealing with the fallout of her previous marriage. “It made us realise we should probably get together and have a family.

Anna Leong Brophy: Born Sexy Yesterday For new perspective on the strange ways we behave, we all know the thought experiment "if a visitor from space arrived on Earth, what would they think?" In Born Sexy Yesterday, Anna Leong Brophy plays a supreme being implanted into a grown woman's body to experience life for the first time. ‘Are you ready for some filth?’ Julian Clary and more on comedy’s great smut explosion
On a street in Edinburgh, a woman I’ve only just met is quizzing me on my sexual fantasies. “Do you want softcore or hardcore? What positions do you prefer?” asks Cameryn Moore, a former phone sex operator turned playwright from the US, along with other, less printable, questions. Her business plan is simple: for £20, punters can tell Moore what turns them on. She will then bash out a piece of bespoke erotic fiction for them on her typewriter.

A Foot Is Not an Appropriate Prize for the Tombola review – a fateful day at the fete

Dog Man: The Musical review – Dav Pilkey’s megastar mutt sniffs out the spotlight in a barking show
Perhaps, if you don’t have a child in primary school, you will be blissfully unaware of Dog Man, Dav Pilkey’s series of graphic novels about a cop who – after a terrible injury – has his dog’s head sewn on to his own body, thereby creating a crime-fighting canine/human crossbreed.
Jimmy Cricket, comedian known for his 'And there's more!' catchphrase, dies aged 80
Jimmy Cricket, the northern Irish comic who became a regular fixture on British television throughout the 1980s, has died aged 80. Known for his catchphrase: “And there's more!”, Cricket fronted his own ITV series of the same name on which he rocked his signature look of tailcoat, short trousers and wellington boots marked clearly with “L” and “R” on the wrong feet.
‘A lot of art in Ireland was made by one type of man’: Richard Malone on taking his colourful fabric creations to the EU Council
‘Just so you know,” says Richard Malone before we begin talking, “if you hear any neighing, it’s not me!” The Irish artist is speaking to me from an unusual studio space: a farm in Stradbally, County Laois. It may have the odd equine intruder, hungry for press coverage, but it also boasts huge lambing sheds – the perfect location for Malone to construct his latest five-metre sculptures. “There’s lovely lambs everywhere and about 20 dogs running around,” he smiles.
My holiday from hell: I went to Ibiza at 16 - and am still haunted by what I saw in a bathroom sink
‘First the bad news,” yelled our lairy Irish club rep as the coach drove us from Ibiza airport to our hotel. “All the great clubs: Amnesia, Space, Pacha … they’re CLOSED!” A confused silence descended. “But the good news?” he yelled. “We’re gonna have a fucking amazing time anyway!!!” Cheers erupted from the lads and ladettes onboard, most of whom probably weren’t planning on checking out the elite superclubs anyway. As for my group … well, I’m not sure we even had a plan.

David Hockney, pioneering British artist famed for his pools and portraits, dies aged 88

Arms and legs are very expressive, especially with bruises: the absurdist photography of Yorgos Lanthimos
Tim Jonze In the centre of Athens, a brand new temple has popped up. Walk around the tall white columns surrounding it and you'll eventually find the entrance to its inner sanctum. It might not be quite as old as the nearby Parthenon but it does hold a unique kind of treasure: the personal photographs of director Yorgos Lanthimos.

Why Bugonia should win the best picture Oscar

‘We watched 9/11 from the rooftop, blasting the music out’: how The Disintegration Loops became a requiem for the attacks Original
‘Do you remember me phoning and saying, ‘Get over here! You won’t believe what’s happened!’” William Basinski is reminiscing with his old friend Anohni about the summer of 2001, when he made a startling discovery. Out of work and at a loose end, the experimental composer had decided to digitise some recordings he’d made in the early 1980s – snippets of orchestral music and muzak he found on shortwave radio stations.

And now for Regular Rabbit (Living Room Version) … images from Professor Spencer's Instagram.Photograph: @_stephenspencer I’m listening to the latest Stephen Spencer song when suddenly I burst into tears. Was it the falsetto vocals? The swirling harmonies? No, it was the lyrics: “What did Apple-the-Stoola say? He said ‘I love you’ twenty-sixty times.” Spencer, you see, has a unique lyrical collaborator: his three-year-old daughter.

From incel culture to the White House: American Psycho’s dark hold on modern masculinity
Patrick Bateman’s business card.Composite: getty/Guardian Design (Composite: getty/Guardian Design) I have just witnessed a murder. Spattered against the white walls of the Almeida theatre are several thin streaks of blood. Underneath them a particularly gruesome-looking hand axe rests on a table. The pub that changed me: ‘It was close. It served Guinness. And it had (just about) functioning toilets'
Park Tavern, Finsbury Park Whatever else you might say about the Park Tavern, you can unequivocally say this: it is, without question, the closest pub to the five-a-side pitches where my team DisOrient FC used to play every Tuesday night from 2011 to 2016. Look, I'm not going to pretend that my team's love of the Park Tavern didn't start out as a marriage of convenience. It was close. It served Guinness. And it had (just about) functioning toilets.
‘So what are you up to tonight?': Meeting Rob Reiner was like a visit from Santa
Rob Reiner's face took up the whole screen. That's my immediate memory – the video link connecting and suddenly, boom, there he was in the room. Kind eyes, jolly cheekbones, a big white beard. It was May when we met but it felt like my own personal visit from Santa. He had a personality to match, the very definition of avuncular. “So what are you up to tonight?” he asked. “Having a nice dinner out in London?” I was completely at ease within 30 seconds.

‘I drunkenly hugged him and said I love you, Martin Parr!' Grayson Perry, Don McCullin and more on Britain's national photographer
Tim Jonze and Lanre Bakare ‘We wanted to visit disappointing tourist attractions' Grayson Perry , artist I've never really been a fanboy, but the first time I saw Martin Parr I ran up and drunkenly hugged him. I said: “I love you Martin Parr!” I couldn't help it. He was a hero of mine. And over the years he became my best artist friend. We were fellow travellers. He was funny, very dry and a big fan of comedy. One of the things we shared is that we both took comedy seriously.
