CPA’s ‘business decisions’ lack business sense, undermine national security
IN recent weeks, the Commonwealth Ports Authority has raised airport fees by an astronomical 90% and hired D.C.-based law firm Kirstein & Young at $775/hour to petition the U.S. Department of Transportation to exempt the Marianas from restrictions imposed on flights from the People’s Republic of China. According to the CPA board’s then-chair, the exorbitant fee hikes and eye-popping legal engagement were common-sense “business decisions,” necessary to “generate revenue” and keep CPA afloat.
Tina Sablan to serve as NMC graduation keynote speaker
Former gubernatorial candidate and House representative Christina-Marie “Tina” E. Sablan has been selected by Northern Marianas College’s Class of 2023 to be the keynote speaker at the college’s 42nd Commencement Exercise this Friday. “Her extensive experience and tireless dedication to public service make her an inspiration to us all,” Class of 2023 representative Charlie Bell Foster said.
OPINION | The US territories will be key for achieving the goals of America the Beautiful
LAST week, around 100 frontline conservation advocates met in Washington, D.C. for meetings organized by the America the Beautiful for All Coalition. Participants came from across the U.S. — Maine to the Marianas, Alaska to Puerto Rico, and everywhere in between. The America the Beautiful for All Coalition is the largest and most diverse environmental coalition ever assembled for the most ambitious land and water conservation goal ever set in the United States.
OPINION | There must be consequences for BOOST fiasco
The following is the text of the author’s statement on the floor during the 22nd House's final session on Jan. 5, 2023, on the report of preliminary findings and recommendations by the Joint Committee (Ways and Means and Judiciary & Governmental Operations). I CONCUR wholeheartedly with the Joint Committee’s recommendation that further legislative investigation into the BOOST program is needed, and should continue in the 23rd Legislature.
OPINION | The promise of change
IT feels like a brand new day in the Marianas. Leila Staffler and I join our fellow Democrats in extending our sincerest congratulations to Governor-elect Arnold Palacios and Lieutenant Governor-elect David Apatang on their decisive victory, which truly is the victory of the people. I am proud of the strength and unity of our coalition, and the focused determination we showed in this runoff election.
Tina Sablan soundly lost once again—and that is a CNMI win - Saipan Tribune
While Tina Sablan and company have worked overtime to attempt to frame the gubernatorial win by the Palacios-Apatang team as a win for her and Democrats, not only is this thoroughly insulting to the good lieutenant governor and mayor who won the election, it attempts to reframe reality. That reality is that she came out last in a three-way race, and by a large margin.
OPINION | It's up to us
EARLY voting is now in full swing, and runoff election day is Friday, November 25, the day after Thanksgiving. This Thanksgiving coincides with one of the meanest, most rancorous political seasons many of us have seen in the Marianas — and also one of our most important elections in a generation. It’s worth pausing to reflect on all of that.
100% fairness and transparency needed in BOOST program
The author made the following statement at the joint meeting of the House Ways and Means Committee and the Judiciary and Governmental Operations Committee this week: THE Secretary of Finance was quoted in the papers saying there is "nothing to hide" in the BOOST program. We have certainly heard that line before, many times, from none other than his boss, the governor himself. Nothing to hide, and yet they hide. They hide so much.
OPINION | The movement for good governance must continue
MOST of the ballots have been counted by now, and the writing is on the wall. It is not the outcome that Leila and I hoped for. But it is an outcome we accept. Leila and I congratulate Governor Torres and Senator Sablan, and Lieutenant Governor Palacios and Mayor Apatang for the success of their respective campaigns as they head into the runoff.

OPINION | On the State of the Commonwealth
MUCH has been said about Governor Torres’ last-minute bungled attempt to deliver a State of the Commonwealth Address (SOCA) right before the 2022 general election. The timing was suspect, the costs questionable, and the other branches of government were not consulted. Traditionally, the SOCA is delivered before a joint session of the Legislature annually and much earlier in the year, in a public venue and with coordination among the branches.
CNMI's Palacios signs EITC bill into law
SAIPAN — Acting Gov. Arnold Palacios on Monday signed into law House Bill 22-19, which "restores" the earned income tax credit to provide relief to qualified working families and taxpayers in the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands. This time, the EITC will be federally funded through the American Rescue Plan. Authored by Rep. Tina Sablan, H.B. 22-19 is now Public Law 22-3. In a statement, acting Gov.
