Introduction Acute emotional stressors such as anxiety and anger are known to be triggers for acute coronary syndrome (ACS).1, 2 These stressors can occur among individuals and in population settings such as natural disasters3 or watching sporting events.4 One area of psychological stress with potential links to ACS that has not been well studied is that of referees.

Football (Soccer) refereeing and cardiovascular health: A scoping review

Discussion A total of 105 studies were identified that focussed on cardiovascular events during matches, potential cardiovascular risk factors, physical activity and psychological stress associated with football refereeing. A majority of studies were case reports (n = 31), with qualitative (n = 30) and cross-sectional (n = 11) studies making up the other large portion.
