Tools arriving in the marketplace have a way of reshuffling people’s expectations and norms about what is acceptable. Once calculators became widely available in the 1970s, it led to a robust argument about whether they should be allowed in schools and what an appropriate age might be for their use. Distinguishing whether athletes in professional sports have used of steroids, despite their potential harms, is another recent example.
