Early every Friday morning for nearly 20 years, my friends and I have gathered to prepare and serve a hot breakfast at Greensboro Urban Ministry (GUM). Our guests, not unlike people you see at the grocery store or in your neighborhood, are by and large good people. The only difference is they work jobs paying at or near minimum wage, and an unexpected event — sick child, car repair, or other emergency — forced them to make a tough choice ... do I pay for this unexpected item, or do I pay my rent?
