The set was ready. The costumes hung in the hallway. The lines and steps were memorized. But “Elf the Musical” was shelved at the very last minute as the COVID-19 pandemic forced schools across the state and country to close their doors to all students. Days became weeks and the weeks turned into months with students learning along the way that all extracurricular activities would remain shut down. No one knew when they would be back.
In the dark? What to do when the power goes out
Editor's note: This article was first published in the aftermath of the March 2017 windstorm. Knowing what to do during a power outage is the key to staying safe, and not just from spoiled food and toppled power lines. Fire departments across the country responded to an average of 9,300 home fires a year from 2009-2013 caused by candles, resulting in $374 million in property damage, according to a report by the National Fire Protection Association.

(Photo: Todd Clausen @ToddJClausen) The annual Color Run trekked through Rochester Saturday, starting and finishing at Frontier Field while twisting and turning throughout downtown. What makes this 5K run a little different isn't the loud music or zumba dancing. Rather at stops along the course runners can get doused with colored powered.
MIDLAKES MAGIC: ACT 4 - Curtain goes up on ‘Big River’
A hallway between Midlakes auditorium and the high school gymnasium has been taken over by the Midlakes Theatre Experience. The lights are dim. The props have been laid out. A table with several glasses of water stands by to provide refreshment to parched vocal cords.
MIDLAKES MAGIC: Act 2 - Making the cut of 'Big River’
A solemn figure emerges in a large, wide hallway inside Midlakes High School and begins a walk to the school’s auditorium, followed by a group of students and staff. Keith Childs, director of Midlakes Theatre Experience, carries a single sheet of paper with the cast list for the school’s spring musical, “Big River, The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn.” The list represents the culmination of auditions for the show, a pressure-filled week in November of singing and dancing by about 30 students.

Weiders Hardware started reining in business in 1879
The roots of Weiders Hardware stretch back, way back, to a time when the Civil War had only ended 14 years earlier. It was in 1879 when Phillip Weider opened his horse-and-harness supply business on Spring Street in downtown Rochester. Flash forward to today, with Weiders Hardware stores in Honeoye Falls and Brighton. Yeah, of course, a lot has changed since the beginning. Back when the business was founded, Rutherford B. Hayes was president and the United States consisted of only 38 states.
Fieldtex transformed an awning company into a soft-sided case, medical product manufacturer
When Sandy Abbey bought the business that became Fieldtex Products, the company made awnings and tents for rent. Now, the Henrietta-based firm is made up of two divisions — one that makes soft-sided cases for portable electronic devices, and another that distributes medical and first-aid products. That’s quite a switch, and it took a while to develop the niche. But it’s been a successful one — Fieldtex has added 50 or so employees in the past five years, boosting employment to 190 today.

The new del Lago Resort & Casino is offering some $99 deals in October on what it’s calling “Hot Dates” and other fall packages. The hope: People will want to combine a day of seeing fall foliage in the Finger Lakes wine country with pumping some money into slot machines and table games. The casino in Tyre, Seneca County, could use it.

Let’s let Tim Baum talk about specifics. “It goes out and cuts your grass,” said Baum, owner and president of Brodner Equipment. “You control it from your smartphone. There’s a line in the ground, like an ‘Invisible Fence’ (to guide it).

Older homes need sprucing to help them sell
Dear Edith: I will be selling my mother's house that my folks purchased in 1965. It is a house they had built. It was our family home. I need to know if a house will sell better with new interior paint on walls, door frames, crown molding etc or just sell as is with the scratch marks, etc. Do buyers get that picky? I need to know if the little stuff is important. When I bought my house it was brand new and I have lived in it for over 30 years, so I have never bought or sold an older home.

There is mold under the kitchen cabinet. Carpet has been removed from a bedroom. We do not have the money to do a major cleaning.
