As we mark the Workers’ Day of Mourning on Tuesday,  it is worth looking at the new, official, 2024 work-related fatality and injury analysis from the Association of Workers’ Compensation Boards of Canada to see where we can make a difference. Locally it has been less than three months since we lost a worker who fell at a Hamilton-based ship repair facility. Last year saw workers threatened by traffic, falls and library frictions in the city.

Is union growth the silver lining of tough times?

Winter weather cold enough to freeze the Great Lakes symbolizes tough times of rising unemployment, tariffs and the economic chill of uncertain international relations. Nonetheless, the latest Labour Force Survey by Statistics Canada offers some solace with news that more than 760,000 workers, net, have joined the union movement compared to before the pandemic. More than 30 per cent of the workforce is unionized in Canada. That represents a three per cent increase since 2019.
