The question is no longer whether One Nation can hang on to its new voters – it has become how high can the party’s vote go? For the first time Pauline Hanson’s party has surged ahead of Labor, now ahead of the government on primary vote 29 per cent (up four) to 26 per cent (down three). And despite Labor going backwards, in a major worry for the Coalition it also lost ground to be down three points, way behind in third position at 20 per cent. It’s worth taking stock on what this could mean.

Albanese government's budget tax changes divides Australians on generational lines Original

Sunday night family dinners could become a lot more interesting in the next few months, with voters divided along generational lines when it comes to the budget handed down last week. The big talking point has been reforms to the capital gains tax and negative gearing, with Sky News Pulse asking voters if the changes will improve access and affordability to housing. Thirty-one per cent believe the changes will help, but 38 per cent say the opposite, and 31 per cent say they will wait and see.

If you’re getting confused as to just what the theme of the next budget actually is, perhaps the latest Sky News Pulse helps explain the politics behind it. Treasurer Jim Chalmers has been talking up a responsible budget with savings – to help pay down debt and avoid more inflation. Voters gave this as their highest response when asked about budget priorities, with 36 per cent wanting budget savings.
