A light late-afternoon breeze cooled the beating sun as I traversed from a sandy footpath onto a slickrock slab. It was a gorgeous 82 degrees on a September afternoon as I trekked through the desert in search of moonshine. Moonshine Arch, that is. It was a simple, well-marked desert hike at the base of Red Mountain, just a few miles from Steinaker Reservoir State Park. I passed ancient junipers, their trunks twisting and turning, and stands of prickly pear cactus sprouting from the sand.

Channeling her inner Julie Andrews from “The Sound of Music,” my wife, Carole, held out her arms and twirled magically in a meadow of golden rabbitbrush high in the Uintas. In the distance, the peaks of the Wasatch Range stood mystically in the haze of wildfire smoke. More than 3,000 feet below, the Weber River coursed through a lush green valley on Thousand Peaks Ranch, down Weber Canyon and on toward Oakley. For a moment, it felt as if we had this immense landscape entirely to ourselves.

Sunday Drive: Rekindling memories in the wildflowers

Walking along the mountain trail before dawn, I watched as the first rays of the sun outlined the ridgeline and painted a salmon hue across the early morning clouds. It would be a hot July day, yet patches of snow were still spotlighted on the steep chutes of Devil’s Castle. Despite the fact that I was surrounded by a cacophony of color amid the wildflowers of Albion Basin, somehow my mind kept drifting to pillows of powder above Cecret Lake and ripping groomer runs down Rock ‘n’ Roll off Supreme.
