Unlimited Miles: Miles Davis At 100—a mesmerizing, all-star 90-minute tribute on May 14 at Presidio Theatre, celebrating the musical giant’s centennial year—left no doubt that the impact of “the sorcerer” will last at least another 100, easy. The music was up front: Talk is cheap if you can play Miles Davis, so pianist John Beasley didn’t introduce his band members until a good 15 minutes into the show.

At ‘Passing the Torch,’ KCSM literally schooled the crowd in jazz

Miranda Wilson, MC of radio station KCSM’s “Passing the Torch” celebration on last Thursday at the College of San Mateo, has a voice made for radio, as crisp and clear as the sunny San Mateo day surrounding us. “The legacy of jazz is in very safe hands with the folks behind me,” Wilson says. The folks behind her are teenage boys in ties, a few more nervous than others.

Marie Harrison, Bayview Activist, Fought for Community’s Health Original

On May 16, 1998, the federal government used 600 pounds of explosives to destroy Marie Harrison’s home, Geneva Towers, the largest residential implosion in California history. It was one of three detonations that rattled her community and inspired her life’s work. The second came on June 18, 2008, when her activism helped light the fuse to implode San Francisco’s old Pacific Gas & Electric Co. power smokestacks, long decried as an environmental and health hazard.
