When I need to restore my faith in democracy, I think of my friend Mia Love
I think we were both a little afraid of each other. The town hall was in a blue area and I was one of the only ones to come up afterwards to talk to Mia Love. Her district director stood extra close, as if she were worried that I could become a physical threat. My expectations were low. I was there to talk to her about climate change, and she had not given any hint in her campaign that she'd be open to that discussion.
How pro-business energy policy can spur Utah's economic growth Original
Energy is the engine that drives our society forward - and energy production is key to Utah's strong economic growth. But we face a power crunch as demand grows, spurred by energy-intensive data centers, and as the older generation is retired. Our state's "Operation Gigawatt" sets a goal of doubling Utah's power production over the next 10 years, ensuring our energy is reliable, affordable, secure and clean.
Opinion - Purchasing books requires good judgment, discernment
The funds for purchasing books and other material for Kennebunk High School (KHS) are limited by the budget. In addition, one can assume that materials presented to students are focused on reinforcing the RSU 21 mission statement of building knowledge and character. Therefore, KHS has to make decisions about which books to include or purchase and which books not to purchase that conform to these two guiding factors. Purchasing books and other materials requires good judgment and discernment.
Conservative Climate Policy
Climate policy is unfamiliar territory for many conservatives. But the field for too long has been left to just one side of the political spectrum. The hesitation is understandable. Many approaches to climate change sound like a conservative’s nightmare - government regulation, degrowth, declining access to energy, and global agreements. But free-market solutions exist. We just haven’t talked enough about them. Conservation is conservative.
Utah's treasurer is trying to hold back the economic tide of sustainability
Utah is uniquely poised to benefit from a new economic revolution. Unfortunately, our state treasurer is sending the opposite message and putting that at risk. The auto industry is going all-in on electric vehicles, with almost every major manufacturer investing heavily in electrification. Companies are building assembly plants for vehicles and batteries as fast as they can, and locking in contracts for critical minerals.
Utah Republicans can help solve climate change
While the politics of climate change divide our nation, the results of a warming planet equally affect all Utahns. Global warming exacerbates our drought, fuels our wildfires and threatens the existence of the Great Salt Lake. Winter temperatures in the U.S. are projected to warm an additional four to ten degrees Fahrenheit by the end of the century, decreasing our snow cover and limiting our snow season. Without snow, Utahns lack drinking water and inflow to the Great Salt Lake.
Guest editorial: Now is the time for bold action on climate change
Madeleine Para and Tom Moyer Earth Day marks one year since President Biden proclaimed that the United States will reduce greenhouse gas emissions 50% by the end of the decade. “This is the decade that we must make decisions to avoid the worst consequences of the climate crisis,” the president said last Earth Day. Hitting that benchmark would keep the U.S. on track to zero out emissions by 2050.
Here’s how Republican Utah can lead out on clean energy and bring real change
President Joe Biden began his term with a flurry of executive orders, many of which were designed to reduce greenhouse gas emissions. While the intent of these orders may be positive, one of them is a blow to Utah and other Western states. To be specific, the administration’s decision to suspend new oil and gas leases on federal lands will do little to change the country’s energy mix while disproportionately impacting rural economies.
Guest opinion: Hydrogen as a fuel source is not that simple
Details Written by Lauren Barros, Tom Moyer Category: Today At Utah Policy Created: 10 March 2021 There is a lot to like in the op-ed, Realizing Utah's clean energy potential, written by Rep. Melissa Ballard in Utah Policy on March 3rd 2021. It is great to see her support of the bipartisan progress being made on environmental issues, both in the Utah Legislature and in Congress. However, I respectfully disagree with her point that hydrogen cars are the vehicles of the future.
Commentary: U.N. conference puts Utah’s climate action on the world stage
(Rick Egan | The Salt Lake Tribune) Roots of Humanity Foundation unveils the first three of its "7 Pillars" windows, created by artist Tom Holdman, unveiled as a preamble to the United Nations’ 68th annual Civil Society Conference being held this week in Salt Lake City, at the 100 Club room at the Vivint Smart Home Arena, Sunday, Aug. 25, 2019. For the first time ever, a United Nations conference on U.S. soil is being held outside of New York City — right here in Salt Lake.
