First ‘cloud jaguar’ spotted in 10 years sparks hope in Honduras
EDITOR’S NOTE: Call to Earth is a CNN editorial series committed to reporting on the environmental challenges facing our planet, together with the solutions. Rolex’s Perpetual Planet Initiative has partnered with CNN to drive awareness and education around key sustainability issues and to inspire positive action. Camera traps have photographed a jaguar high up in the Honduran Sierra del Merendón mountain range, the first time the big cat has been detected there in a decade.
After surviving a horrific buffalo attack, these conservationists doubled down on protecting nature
Celebrated photographer and conservationist Beverly Joubert is lucky to be alive. She died — four times by her husband Dereck’s count — working in Botswana in March 2017. The Jouberts were in the bush in the Okavango Delta, when a buffalo, a creature they had extensive experience with, knocked Dereck down, before impaling his wife. The horn entered under her arm, passing through her chest, lacerated her neck and went up into her face.
Egypt’s 155mph high-speed trains unveiled
Travelers and critical cargo in Egypt could soon be moving faster thanks to high-speed trains recently unveiled by Siemens Mobility. The company’s new version of its Velaro train, capable of speeds of 250 kilometers per hour (155 miles per hour), made its public debut in Egypt at the TransMEA 2025 show in New Cairo on November 9.

Make art, not war: Why an artist spent five years and used 35 million beads to transform a supersonic jet
Ralph Ziman estimates he was 13 or 14 years old the first time he had a gun pulled on him in anger. It was the mid 1970s, and he was with friends outside a shopping mall in the northern suburbs of his hometown of Johannesburg, South Africa. Someone may have looked the wrong way at a stranger’s girlfriend – his memory is fuzzy. What isn’t fuzzy is the sight of that stranger pointing a .45 Magnum in their direction. Luckily the situation de-escalated, and everyone walked away that day.

This startup wants to green the desert using microalgae and agricultural waste
It’s hard to green the desert. Take China, or Africa’s Sahel region, for example. Their “Great Green Walls,” grand projects to beat back encroaching desert by planting trees, have required decades of slog, innumerable saplings and billions of dollars – and even then, critics have questioned how sustainable these solutions are. The United Arab Emirates (UAE) is 80% desert. Only 0.7% of land is arable and it imports more than 90% of its food.

This alien plant is lethal for the environment. Now it’s being turned into a plastic to regrow forests
Lake Naivasha, northwest of Nairobi, Kenya is becoming increasingly unnavigable. Water hyacinth, the world’s most widespread invasive species, is blanketing the lake, choking its fish and leaving people stranded. “Sometimes it becomes very serious,” says Simon Macharia, a local fisherman, about the weed problem. “There was this incident where fishermen were trapped by hyacinth inside the lake for three days.
This greenhouse keeps crops cool. It could prove valuable as our planet bakes
In a world where the climate is increasingly hot and volatile, farmers are having trouble keeping their crops cool. A startup founded in the desert of Saudi Arabia thinks it might have a solution. Its technology reduces temperatures inside greenhouses by up to 7 degrees Celsius, without losing any light, by using nanotechnology embedded within plastic polymer sheeting to cut out near infrared solar radiation.
Hydrogen-powered skyscraper set for Egypt’s new capital
Tom Page, CNN September 4, 2024 at 1:28 AM·4 min read Egypt’s “New Administrative Capital,” a new city deep into construction outside Cairo, has prompted plenty of blue-sky thinking. But few ideas have been as ambitious as powering a skyscraper with hydrogen. The Forbes International Tower, a 240 meter (787 feet) tall office building due to be constructed close to the Iconic Tower — Africa’s tallest building — was planned from the outset to be environmentally conscious.
‘We don’t need more concrete’: A new village in Tanzania will use a 3D printer and soil to build its community
Building with 3D printers has matured rapidly in recent years, as advances in technology and material science allow for grander and more ambitious designs. The potential uses are also increasingly varied, from affordable housing to a planned NASA base on the Moon. Most 3D-printed structures are built using concrete or other pourable, cementitious substances that are cheap, reliable and durable — although, almost invariably, with a hefty carbon footprint attached.
Finally, an answer to a mystery surrounding these 1,000-year-old trees
For millions of years, mighty baobabs have been standing sentry on three different landmasses, posing each other an existential question: Who came first? The giant trees, swollen of trunk and stubby of canopy, are unmistakable. Baobabs can live for more than 1,000 years, acting as the keystone species in dry forest environments in Madagascar, a swathe of continental Africa, and northwest Australia.
Creating an Ansible controller config as code pipeline
In a previous article, I described how to implement configuration as code for automation controller (then Red Hat Ansible Tower) using the controller_configuration Ansible Content Collection created by the Red Hat Community of Practice. In this article, I describe how to take that Collection and create an organization-wide solution to deploying configuration as code. The code in this article makes use of the updated redhat_cop.controller_configuration Collection.
How to be an LGBTQ+ friendly cycling group
A cycling group is much more than a bunch of strangers who ride together. It’s a community of welcoming individuals who have come together to share their love of cycling. It’s a place to make new friends, connect with others and explore the great outdoors. One of Cycling UK’s five core values is ‘Cycling for all’. However, without a deliberate focus on diversity and inclusion, some people may feel less welcome in cycling groups than others.
Configuring Ansible Tower with the Tower Configuration Collection
One of the goals of Red Hat Services is to bring a standardized and collaboratively created toolkit and approach to customers to speed up and improve automation practices. Red Hat’s Automation Community of Practice--a part of Red Hat Services--has created a new collection that acts as a wrapper for the ansible.tower collection, creating a powerful toolkit to help speed up the automation of an Ansible Tower environment.
Barnacle analysis may help solve "missing at sea" mysteries
When it's determined that a boater is officially missing at sea, it helps very much to know when and where their vessel sank. According to new research, barnacles growing on flotsam could provide that information. Unlike other species of goose barnacles that attach themselves to rocks, Lepas anserifera are found almost exclusively on objects that have been floating in the ocean.
Spies in the Shadows and the FBI’s Bigfoot File
The media storm all began with a message via Twitter. The FBI Records Vault sent out a tweet at 1:00 PM on June 5, 2019. It was simple enough. It had one single word: Bigfoot. And a link. The FBI’s Bigfoot File That link revealed 22 (or 23, in some reportage) pages of documents that included letters between Peter Byrne’s The Bigfoot Information Center and Exhibition and and the FBI Lab, plus paper clippings of Bigfoot sightings and related phenomena.

How you type on your smart phone can reveal your age
When computers hit the mainstream, the older guy in the office would always be sniggered at when bashing away on his QWERTY keyboard, only using his two index fingers to type. To the amusement of his younger, tech-savvy colleagues, he would almost look Neanderthal next to those who grew up with computers and used all their fingers on the keyboard quickly and fluently.
