Level Unlocked: How Video Game Companies Can Evolve Operating Models for Growth
This article is part of Bain's 2024 Gaming Report As video game companies prepare for the industry’s next wave of growth, executives are finding that the operating model that got them to this point simply won’t work for the next chapter. That’s true for every video game company, whether it’s a small, single-game developer or a multibillion-dollar developer and publisher of AAA franchises. Over the past decade, the video game industry has grown significantly. So, too, has its complexity.
Beyond the Love of the Game: Talent in the Video Game Industry
As the video game industry grows, the definition of what it means to be a world-class game company is changing. Game companies that once relied on their employees’ passion for the game now need to develop more comprehensive talent models. Talent is a constant source of concern for senior executives in the game industry. Despite last year’s tech layoffs, talent shortages are perennial, with gaming job postings growing by about 40% over the past three years.
How Will Generative AI Change the Video Game Industry?
Generative AI is just beginning to have an effect on video games, but gaming industry executives believe that over the next 5 to 10 years, it will contribute to more than half of the video game development process. Bain spoke with gaming industry executives about the potential and the challenges of generative AI for their industry.
