Police investigate active crime scene in downtown Topeka

Sept. 3, 2026, 3:30 p.m. CT Local law enforcement is asking Topekans to avoid an area near downtown. The Topeka Police Department posted Sept. 3 on its Facebook page urging residents to avoid the 700 block of SW Jackson Street. Kimberly Qualls, a TPD spokesperson, said the area is an active investigation scene and that updates will be provided once they are available. This is an ongoing story.

Kansas native Martina McBride is among the musical artists who have withdrawn from their announced performances at The Great American State Fair, organized by President Donald Trump-backed Freedom 250. McBride was born July 29, 1966, at Medicine Lodge in Barber County in south-central Kansas. McBride, who was inducted in 2007 into the Kansas Music Hall of Fame, moved to Nashville in 1989 and put out her first album in 1992.
