Tony Castro’s Biography

TONY CASTRO is a Harvard and Baylor University-educated historian, Napoleonic scholar and bestselling author of several books, including the landmark civil rights history "Chicano Power," which Publishers Weekly acclaimed as “brilliant… a valuable contribution to the understanding of our time.”

He is also the author of critically recognized biographies of Ernest Hemingway and baseball legends Mickey Mantle and Joe DiMaggio, as well as the new best-selling dual biography of Babe Ruth and Lou Gehrig, "Gehrig & The Babe: The Friendship and The Feud" (Triumph Books).

His latest book is "Mantle: The Best There Ever Was," published by Rowman & Littlefield.

He is currently working on a biography of Napoleon Bonaparte.

The New York Times hailed Tony's "Mickey Mantle: America's Prodigal Son" as the definitive biography of the baseball icon.

His other books include the 2016 releases "DiMag & Mick: Sibling Rivals, Yankee Blood Brothers" (Lyons Press) and "Looking for Hemingway: Spain, The Bullfights & A Final Rite of Passage" (Lyons Press).

As a Nieman Fellow at Harvard University, Tony studied under Homeric scholar and translator Robert Fitzgerald, Mexican Nobel laureate Octavio Paz, and French history scholars Laurence Wylie and Stanley Hoffman.

He is also a popular public speaker known for his wit and humor. He most recently lectured at his alma mater, Baylor University, on The Religion of Sports: From Michelangelo to Derek Jeter.

Tony lives in Los Angeles with his wife Renee LaSalle and Jeter, their black Labrador retriever. Their two grown sons, Trey and Ryan, also reside in Southern California.
